As Liz Lemon of "30 Rock" once said, "Valentine's Day is a sham created by card companies to reinforce and exploit gender stereotypes." There's that and the general lack of romance in the Dartmouth dating scene or, more accurately, the "hook-up scene" to begin with. While I'm sure some couples did enjoy an intimate dinner at FoCo on Valentine's Day, I'm also sure others were wondering whether it would be appropriate to schedule a pong date that day and if that would pass as romantic. So here's a more appropriate V-Day collection of songs celebrating sexual and relationship dysfunction, promiscuity, infidelity and revenge. Hope everyone had a happy Anna Howard Shaw Day!

But I'd like to explain my recent focus on the mainstream by pointing out the steady proliferation of ridiculous news and scandals surrounding the world of mainstream music. Although these incidents typically have nothing to do with the music, I enjoy the opportunities they provide me to wax bitter and spiteful.

For the game, viewers got to see this year's underdogs, the New Orleans Saints, defeat the Indianapolis Colts to gain their first Superbowl victory. The ads during the Superbowl quite possibly the only time commercials aren't met with impatience and annoyance featured children and animals resorting to violence for Doritos, grown men transforming into the likes of Betty White and Abe Vigoda because of a hunger that only a Snickers bar could satisfy, and a handful of other brands employing the expected call to machismo.

I have always despised gossip and those who participate in it. We all know that gossip-mongers are just devious haters in disguise and no one likes a hater (that's part of the definition of hater after all). For that reason, whenever I hear someone spouting rumors, I well, actually I keep my mouth shut and listen intently. But wanting to be tuned in to the widespread beliefs of the masses doesn't make me hypocritical just informed.

As a self-proclaimed music enthusiast and the weekly music columnist for the Arts & Entertainment section of The Dartmouth, staying on top of music news, recent releases, upcoming festivals and notable awards is the most well-defined responsibility I have and one of the easiest to carry out. As such, Sunday night's Grammy Awards which, over its 52-year history, has become the most recognizable of music awards shows should have been a must-watch for me.

What better way to expand your horizons and learn about new cultures than to travel? Of course, the real reason for traveling now is just to escape the barren, soul-crushing dreariness that is a New Hampshire winter. There are times when I think that song lyrics could not get any worse and the music industry could not get more shallow. And then they do.

Money is apparently the root of all our troubles. We complain about life being hard when we don't have any and then whine about the problems that ensue from having too much (though I'm personally not qualified to confirm the latter). That being said, I appeal to each and every one of you to join me in the fight to reinstitute the barter system. Together, we can change the world for better or worse.

I was beginning to think Lady Gaga wasn't human. After all, she's been virtually ubiquitous over the past few months: Beyonce's music video for "Video Phone," a meeting with the Queen of England, the "Monster Ball" tour to promote her sophomore album "The Fame Monster," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," my music column. She's been infiltrating other artists' music videos and the press, traveling the country and meeting important world figures if that doesn't sound like your typical alien takeover, I don't know what does.

Musicians and bands have been voicing their opinions on school throughout the decades, and the consensus is clear: School is just too awkward, frustrating and oppressive to be worth the trouble. So listen to this playlist on repeat while you work up the courage to tell your parents you're dropping out of college to pursue your destiny to make spontaneous, but misguided life decisions.

If our technological devices ever develop enough sentience and agency to decide to rebel against the human race, I have no doubt that they would succeed. Technology has become a necessity in our lives, from smartphones that let us communicate and share in a variety of ways to robots that help us domestically by automatically detecting and eliminating messes, to GPS devices that ensure our safety by allowing parents to track their children (which is admittedly a nice step up from child leashes).

On Jan. 1, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell announced via Facebook, Twitter and MySpace the holy trinity of social networks that his grunge-rock band would be reuniting, 26 years after their initial formation and 12 years after their disbanding. Cornell, however, did not divulge any details as to what that reunion would entail.

Relationships take work. That's a fairly standard truism that people tend to forget all too easily. It's also one that many people don't realize holds true for the relationship between performers in pop music and their fans.

The end of the term (and with it, finals, papers and projects) is looming overhead, but there still remain a few weeks of concerts worth checking out in Hanover's closest neighboring metropolis Boston.

For some reason, Dartmouth students have an impulsive need to be constantly overbooked, over-scheduled and overwhelmed. We constantly complain about our lack of free time, but when confronted with the actual possibility of having some, we quickly join another organization or find ourselves another job to fill all the time we don't have.

There have been times in our society's history when progress starts unraveling. Bush's reelection in 2004, the production of sexually objectified Bratz dolls and any reality television series currently airing or even being imagined stand out as prominent examples of moments when America saw growth and the potential for change in the horizon and then turned around and ran in the opposite direction.

The series kicks off today with a concert by QQQ, whose name was enigmatically scrawled in chalk around Collis and plastered on walls across campus over the past week. The resulting aura of mystery suits the group's music well. The ensemble blends Norwegian wedding marches with a spurring combo of bluegrass and folk. Topped off with a delicate sprinkling of classical music, the result is a layered, spontaneous sound that escapes predictability.

If art imitates life and life imitates art, then that leaves little room for any distinction between the two. With the level of celebrity obsession in our culture made possible by an overwhelming number of invasive paparazzi, gossip sites and tabloids we've been able to hoard over both from artists. When a musician writes about a difficult experience, we know what incident he's referring to and all the specific details not given in the song.

The All Stars found each other in refugee camps in Guinea, West Africa, after a brutal and horrific civil war displaced the musicians and ravaged their native Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002.

"Because Frat Row is so dominant and also so large, a significant [portion] -- if not a majority -- of Dartmouth students can just go to Frat Row on any given party night and expect to see their friends there," Alex Mercado '11 said. "So wanting to follow the crowd socially, Frat Row is a very simple default."
