Last Wednesday, student workers at Dartmouth Dining Services formally announced their intention to unionize by establishing the Student Worker Collective at Dartmouth. The student workers’ primary demands, outlined in an open letter to the College administration posted on social media, include that the College voluntarily recognize the union through a third-party card check agreement and that student workers are guaranteed paid sick leave.

As returning students arrived on campus this weekend for the start of fall term, Hanover business owners and residents said that the influx of students has energized the town, bringing the town to life and boosting sales for local stores.

The College officially reinstated its indoor mask mandate Thursday, following new recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and similar measures adopted by the town of Hanover due to the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant. However, as of now, physical distancing and restrictions on gathering size will not be imposed, nor will the outdoor masking requirement be reinstated, according to interim provost David Kotz.

On April 3, the economics department hosted the inaugural Dartmouth Undergraduate Economics Research Conference — an online event that featured student presenters, alumni speakers and a keynote speech from Rutgers University economics professor and former U.S. Department of Labor chief economist Bill Rodgers ’86. The conference, which attracted roughly 40 attendees, was intended to showcase the breadth of economics research done by Dartmouth undergraduates and to spark interest in economics research among the student body.

In the wake of the shooting of eight people in Georgia, six of them Asian women, Dartmouth students, faculty and alumni are calling on the College to found a robust Asian American studies program. As of Sunday, a petition being circulated online has garnered more than 790 signatories ranging from Dartmouth community members to professors at peer institutions.

Newly admitted members of Dartmouth’s Class of 2025, many of whom had to get to know, apply to and interview with the College entirely remotely, faced unique challenges in what proved to be an especially competitive early decision admissions cycle. Out of a record-breaking 2,664 applicants, the College admitted 566 students on Thursday.

As one of the four candidates poised to fill Hanover and Lyme’s four seats in the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, government professor Russell Muirhead is presumed to be sworn in this January. Much of his recent research has focused on political polarization in the U.S., and he recently authored a new book, “A Lot of People Are Saying: The New Conspiracism and the Assault on Democracy.”
