Bass and drums are generally thought to be paired with guitars, not pianos, but The Bad Plus counters that idea with lively jazz that relies on a piano-drums-bass trio. The outfit originally consisted of pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King, but the three are currently collaborating with saxophonist Joshua Redman.

The women’s soccer team failed to replace the goose egg in their Ivy League win column this weekend, losing 0-1 to Yale University on Saturday evening at Reese Stadium in New Haven, Connecticut. Despite out-shooting the Bulldogs 11-5 and putting the ball in dangerous positions many times, the Big Green could not find the back of the net.

In its fourth consecutive Ivy League game this past Saturday, the field hockey team fell to the University of Pennsylvania 3-2 in the last two minutes of the second overtime period after a hard fought game. The Quakers scored the game-winning goal with a minute and 17 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Penn its ninth-straight win. The Quakers improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in Ivy League play, while the Big Green dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in Ivy League play.

I didn’t know much about the place — I learned of its existence approximately 10 minutes before arriving. The ambience was overwhelmingly pleasant — it’s a classic bakery with prominent glass display cases and wooden floors and furniture.

There were 20 percent fewer reports made to Safety and Security over Homecoming weekend this year than there had been the previous year and reports of intoxicated individuals were also down, Safety and Security directory Harry Kinne said.

Seventy-nine percent of professors, of those who were scheduled to have a special Saturday class, elected not to hold class on Saturday, Sept. 26, according to an anonymous survey of faculty conducted by The Dartmouth. Eighty-four percent indicated that they do not intend to hold class Saturday, Oct. 24.

Following its elimination of dues earlier this term, Phi Tau gender-inclusive fraternity saw a slight increase in number of bids offered. Overall, 32 students were offered bids at coed Greek houses this year, officers of Phi Tau, Alpha Theta and the Tabard gender-inclusive fraternities said.

According the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, more than 60 percent of college students consume alcohol at least once per month, and Dartmouth is certainly no exception. During my first month here, however, I have not had a single drink. Admittedly, it has been a bit strange to maintain my sobriety pledge when you hear statements like, “I have never been as drunk as I was during Orientation.” Coming here, I knew that my first year would be a big adjustment and I have tried to keep an open mind. Alcohol was simply not a substance with which I was interested in experimenting.
