Daily Debriefing
Chinese activist Chen Guancheng announced that he would join the Witherspoon Institute research center in Princeton, N.J., as a three-year fellow on Wednesday, The New York Times reported. Chen made headlines last year when he escaped from house arrest and sought refuge in Beijing's U.S. Embassy after protesting against the Chinese government's family-planning policies in the province of Shandong. New York University law professor Jerome Cohen said the institute's conservative stances on abortion and same-sex marriage might make Chen a less effective human rights advocate. Chen maintained that the institute valued his passion for democracy and free speech, while Witherspoon's president Luis Tellez said the institute does not expect Chen to "represent our issues," just "to do the important work he does."

College will no longer pay for party packs
Party packs, the ubiquitous bundles of bottled water, garlic bread and marinara sauce from Everything But Anchovies found in the front rooms of fraternities and sororities hosting parties, may disappear from Webster Avenue this year because of their high cost. Party packs, which cost around $30,000 a year, will no longer be funded by the College, Greek Leadership Council moderator Elliot Sanborn '14 said.. Designed to reduce the risks associated with drinking, party packs have been a staple of registered events at Greek houses across the College since bystander intervention program Green Team was founded in 2011.

What Have We Done?
Week three (through week seven) of a Dartmouth quarter means that midterms are upon us, and it's time to come up with a new crop of excuses for why we simply cannot study. The two of us met to review the "progress" we have made so far.

All The School's a Stage
"Rude Mechanicals is one of the only student theater groups on campus, so that's rare in and of itself, and it's definitely the only one that focuses on Shakespeare," member Michael Parets '14 said. "Having Shakespeare as the focal point of the group gives it a lot of direction."
Editor's Note
Shrink it down to Dartmouth. Every moment here feels special, like it's happening for the first time. But it's not. Professors and administrators who stick around for awhile see more than a dozen "best classes ever" come and go. Alumni come back and are shocked to find that the campus that was once theirs has moved on.
