"We feel that [the PE requirement] is part of the total educational experience," Roger Demment, senior associate athletic director for physical education and recreation, said. "Dartmouth is set in a rural area and we feel that a healthy body goes hand-in-hand with a healthy mind. Dartmouth's Institute for Writing and Rhetoric, a new program aimed at improving students' writing and speaking skills, offered courses for the first time this Fall term. The institute combines the existing Writing Program for freshmen with more advanced writing courses and a new speech curriculum.

Not many people at Dartmouth realize that we have an athletic program that is so dominant that it is out-scoring its opponents by nearly 3.5 to 1 -- a program that won a national championship as recently as 1997 and looks poised to compete for another one this year. Last week Wachovia froze approximately $9.3 billion of funds invested by nearly 1,000 colleges and universities held by the short-term education investment fund, Commonfund, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported Monday. All institutions, including Dartmouth, were originally limited access to only 10 percent of their assets in the fund, according to The Chronicle, which caused a problem for institutions that were relying on assets in the fund for immediate cash expenses and payments. Colleges and universities presently have access to approximately 34 percent of their funds, According to The Daily Pennsylvanian. Representatives from Moody's Investment Services told the Chronicle that all institutions with assets in Commonfund will have access to approximately 57 percent of their funds by the end of the year.

In an effort to increase cell phone signal strength on campus, Agito Networks will implement a new system at Dartmouth that will allow cell phones to use both cellular and wireless signals, according to David Bucciero, director of Technical Services at the College. Since Dartmouth's campus is completely wireless, certain cell phones will now work anywhere on campus, Bucciero said.
