With Halloween right around the corner, I decided I wanted to put my questions about ghosts to rest. Do they exist? In a quest for truth, I sought out two haunted inns in Vermont to talk to staff members about the mysterious happenings they have witnessed. Put down your spiked cider and decide for yourself if you believe.

We stood in the foyer of Panarchy, staring at a patch of brown water damage on the ceiling. "People think that's where a ghost has been," Panarchy member Caroline Brandt '09 told me. Cocking our heads to the side, we searched for the profile of a face. After rotating a couple of times, I finally saw it; a long nose and an eerily faded eye appeared in the plaster. "It looks like water damage to me," Brandt said.

There are artists that make a habit out of abusing their vocal cords, and in the process, abusing some listeners' ears. While it's easy to dismiss all screaming in music as unintelligible noise that reflects a lack of talent, there are nuances and depth to screaming that not everyone realizes.

Over the din of all the harsh criticism, all the movie-bashing and other silly news stories involving not-so-clever titles that follow the formula "An Inconvenient X," Al Gore has come away with a Nobel Peace Prize. I'd rather not talk about the award itself, but rather use it as a springboard to get to what really matters: his ideas.

As we roll into November 2007 with all political eyes fixed on November 2008, do not let this year's Election Day pass you by. The contests may be less than nail-biting, but voting is still a virtue, and we should head to the polls as always. Right? Actually, no.

After a couple of disheartening losses at the hands of two non-conference opponents, Dartmouth football recovered beautifully on Homecoming Saturday, beating the Columbia Lions 37-28 in front of a sizable and enthusiastic home crowd. The game was hotly contested throughout, and the Big Green's margin of victory, in all fairness, doesn't quite do the heated nature of the contest justice.

"I'm very happy that the team was able to hang on to our 1-0 lead and to also secure the shutout," Head Coach Amy Fowler said. "We did a great job defensively and held them scoreless in the second half when they put the most pressure on us."

Dartmouth squash coach Hansi Wiens' fiancee, Valeria Vinnikova, was arrested last Friday for a minor visa infraction. She is now in danger of being deported and could be banned from returning to the United States for 10 years, according to The Valley News. The arrest took place along the Canadian border as both Vinnikova and Wiens were entering Canada to renew Vinnikova's visa. According to Wiens, a border guard had previously misread her visa form, telling her she had until Oct. 13 to renew her visa when in fact it said Oct. 3. Vinnikova is now in jail in Cumberland County, Maine. Her lawyer is working to get Homeland Security to grant Vinnikova a 30-day grace period to leave the United States in order to avoid the 10-year ban. If this fails, Wiens said he does not know what he will do. "I can't live for 10 years without her," Wiens told The Valley News.
