In the science-fair atmosphere of the Career Fair, students packed the corporate section in Alumni Hall, exuding fear, confusion and a healthy dose of skepticism. Enthusiastic first-year analysts and consultants threw around seductive words like "expense account," "social events" and "collegiate environment" while evading the inevitable question: "Do you like your job?" While some seniors seemed more thrilled by the free candy, pens equipped with tiny post-it notes, and the opportunity to catch up with their favorite '06 corporate surprises, others were dead set on their career ambition: selling their souls to The Man.

Earlier this week, I played a fun game. Basically, I sat on the Green and I guessed which Dartmouth students were headed to the Career Fair. The final score of this "game" was something like 100 to 3 (The SAEs really threw off my game).

To the Editor:

The one term utilized ad nauseam more than any other throughout freshman orientation at Dartmouth is "diversity." The College preaches "diversity" almost to a point of overcompensation while trying its darndest to use this diluted word as a grand sales pitch for prospective students. Lectures throughout orientation and beyond carry almost identical themes of growth and maturity through an acceptance and appreciation of differences. While the sheer quantity of activities centered on "diversity" may, in the long run, cheapen the term, it is difficult not to respect this attempt at encouraging a fully-tolerant student body. Yet as my third Yom Kippur in Hanover approaches, Dartmouth's heavily loaded emphasis on "diversity" seems nothing more than empty rhetoric.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials have reported that a stuffed teddy bear is responsible for causing the deaths of 2,500 trout at a hatchery in Milford. According to Hatchery Supervisor Robert Fawcett, the teddy bear clogged a drain, thus depriving the fish of dissolved oxygen and resulting in their unfortunate suffocation. "Please think before you act. If a teddy bear is dropped accidentally, find a fish culturist and tell them quickly, so they might save your teddy bear, and keep it from becoming a killer," Fawcett said. Hatchery officials, in order to account for this new threat, added the following warning to the end of the somber press release: "RELEASE OF ANY TEDDY BEARS into fish hatchery water IS NOT PERMITTED."

With the beginning of another fall, a new crop of television hopefuls emerges on the prime-time line up. Reminiscent of sitcoms past, mini-series of the ages, and reality programming of yesteryear, few new shows manage to snag the attention of both viewers and critics, let alone survive the turmoil of their freshman year. However, television shows like "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives," and "Nip/Tuck" have managed to withstand disappointments and surprise audiences with what could be their strongest seasons yet.
