The synonyms for inertia are numerous in the dictionary -- inertness, indisposition to motion, exertion, or action, want of energy and sluggishness. In common parlance, we often find it manifested in Isaac Newton's fundamental laws that govern physical motion on earth. Transcending this, however, is the concept of inertia in our lives -- and this crucial facet of life often remains unexamined.

They rock Collis, they shake The Hop, but before they find their place in the spotlight, the superstars of Dartmouth's many performing groups go through a rigorous audition process that few of the less artistically inclined members of campus know about.

Yesterday, several Dartmouth professors spoke on the change in American foreign policy and the world's response to it since Sept. 11, 2001, as part of the panel series "September 11 One Year Later." The consensus: despite the expression of sympathy after the terrorist attack in the United States, the world complains about American foreign policy and fosters an increase in anti-Americanism.

"Mostly Martha" is a semisweet film overcooked to a bitter aftertaste. The movie is the story of Martha Klein (Martina Gedeck), a neurotic and willful master chef left to care for her troubled niece after a car accident. Her anxieties are compounded by the presence of Mario (Sergio Castellitto), an eccentric sous-chef with a penchant for Martha's secret saffron sauce.

That public speakers in America will reference terrorism at every opportunity is now a given. It is a reflex reaction -- put any group of luminaries behind a podium, squeeze them and the words "September 11" will pop out.

See, Dad? I've got my digital camera. What do you think about that, Mr. You'll-Lose-That-Thing-In-A-Week?" I gestured to my father as I stepped off the airport shuttle, brandishing my digital camera. What a kill-joy he'd been, bending my ear about camera thieves while I packed for Europe. He believed that you couldn't bring a digital camera through four countries, 12 train rides, four airplane flights and up an 8,700-foot mountain without it getting stolen. He didn't count on me keeping the damn thing attached to my body on more or less a permanent basis for 18 days. Having brought only a week's worth of clothes, most of what I wore became unpleasantly familiar but nothing quite as much as that nylon camera case.

Low student attendance at a discussion about the way America has changed politically, spiritually and socially since Sept. 11 highlighted panelists' consensus: that the terrorist attacks created a "lighting bolt effect" in which issues were illuminated but the landscape remained unchanged.

Robin Williams has had a rather varied film career. Somewhere between "Mrs. Doubtfire," "What Dreams May Come" and "Death to Smoochy," the quality of his films has slipped. While many saw "Insomnia" as a return to form, with Williams facing off with a critics' favorite, Al Pacino, that appears to have been a bit premature. And while the perception was widespread of "One Hour Photo" as a branching out effort, it ended up coming off as more of a coup de grace for Williams' career.

Hanover, while not quite nestled in a Canadian mountain range, has a rugged, outdoor allure of its own. Sitting in the shadow of the Whites with ties to Moosilauke and miles of the Appalachian Trail on the fringe of a national forest, it's natural that several cultural events from mountainous regions find their reflections here on the banks of the Connecticut, the natural gateway to Vermont.
