Women's icers sweep Niagara

(11/17/98 11:00am)

Niagara University came to Hanover this weekend armed with a goalie from the Canadian under-22 National Team and hopes of containing the aggressive offense of the Ivy League Champion Dartmouth Women's Ice Hockey team. That is just what Niagara did in the first period of the two-game series this past weekend, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Once the referee dropped the puck on center ice to begin the second period, however, the Big Green put on a clinic. Dartmouth outscored Niagara 11-1 over the next five periods of play and outshot the Purple Eagles 115-24 in the series.

What International Students?

(11/17/98 11:00am)

Many members of the Dartmouth community have been wrestling with the issue of diversity and its meaning. The events of the past two weeks have further exposed the largely homogenous society that is Dartmouth. We have spoken about all different types of diversity but we have not spoken about cultural diversity -- that which is brought by international students. As you may have guessed, I am an international student myself. I have an accent. I spell and pronounce words like the English do -- colour, emphasise, draught, "kleek" (clique) and not "click," "boofay" ( buffet) and not "buffay." There are not many international students here and, in general, we are not a vocal bunch. However, since there is so much dialogue on campus about stereotyping people, I thought that I would give a different perspective -- that of an international student.

Students participate in woods rescue

(11/17/98 11:00am)

Late Thursday afternoon, members of the New England K-9 Search and Rescue Team responded to a distress call reporting 88-year-old Kenneth Lewis of Plymouth, N.H., as missing. The Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team (UVWRT), a volunteer, non-profit group affiliated with the Dartmouth Medical School's Community Service Project, was called early the next morning to aid the search team, which finally located the man in the woods near his home.
