I readily admit that I'm not the most health-conscious person in the world. I generally don't watch what I eat, rarely remember to take my vitamins and have never been in the weight room at the Berry Athletic Center. I did run a few times, but I ended up in muscle pain for about 72 hours after logging only a mile. I know that a lot of people find exercising fun, running to be invigorating and weight lifting to be a hobby, yet, probably unfortunately, I just find all of those things boring.

Not since the debate over gays in the military has America infused an issue with such profound and divisive meaning as it has with the O.J. Simpson trial. The racial divisions it engenders exacerbate legitimate tensions over serious issues like welfare reform. Some blacks hailed the verdict as a blow for social justice. However, the tokenism of the verdict and of black America's response bespeaks only political impotence, a condition that compels blacks to find more forthright tactics and implicates a white-run political system that denies blacks a more effective voice.

This summer, a large majority of the U.S. House of Representatives (including my own Representative) voted to approve an amendment to the Constitution prohibiting "flag desecration," whatever that means. This amendment does not really make it clear what constitutes "desecration." If I were to take a photograph of an American flag and ripped it up, would that constitute "desecration?" Who decides? Are we going to have 50 different state laws on this subject?

Modern American culture commonly tells us to use our "voices" so as to maintain individuality within our society.
