With two two-game sweeps, softball improved its Ivy League record 8-0 for the best start in the program’s history. The weekend closed with a 12-1 five-inning annihilation of the Ivy League’s defending champions, the University of Pennsylvania. Dartmouth worked on all cylinders, as the Big Green outscored Columbia and Penn by a combined 27-7 in the four games.
Dartmouth’s crew teams opened their spring race seasons this Saturday away from Hanover, with the women’s number one boat taking first place. The women drove to Boston to face University of Minnesota and Rutgers University, the men’s lightweight team trekked to Princeton, N.J. where it took on the University of Delaware and the men’s heavyweight team traveled to Overpeck Park, N.J. to compete against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the College of the Holy Cross and Columbia University in the Alumni Cup.
It looks like spring has finally sprung here in Hanover. With warmer temperatures come two things: shorts and huge Dartmouth athletics home weekends.
This week, I sat down with softball pitcher Kristen Rumley ’15, who has 11 wins on the year for the 18-13 Big Green. The Texas native leads the Ancient Eight in wins, strikeouts and saves. Rumley has 128 strikeouts in the early season, 51 clear of University of Pennsylvania junior Alexis Borden. After two two-game sweeps this weekend, the Big Green leads the Ivy League at 8-0. Last week, Rumley was awarded her second Ivy League Pitcher of the Week award of the season.
On March 26, as Dartmouth students trudged through lingering piles of snow on the third day of spring classes, student-athletes across the country had more than just the distant promise of better weather to celebrate. In Chicago, a regional director for the National Labor Relations Board ruled that football players at Northwestern University could be considered employees of the institution, giving them the right to unionize and bargain collectively — a landmark ruling for the college athletes’ rights movement.
This week I sat down to talk to the women’s lacrosse team’s four-year starting goalie Kristen Giovanniello ’14 to talk about her consistent play, the trials of being a goalie and her plans after Dartmouth.

The men’s lacrosse team lost to Ivy League foe No. 2 Cornell University this Saturday in its 2014 home opener 19-4. The win kept Cornell’s (9-0, 3-0 Ivy) season-opening winning streak alive and dropped the Big Green to 1-5, 0-2 Ivy on the season.
Austin, Texas — When co-captain Nejc Zupan ’14 sported green and white for the last time at the NCAA swim and dive championships this weekend in Austin, he went up against enormous packs of vicious Wildcats, jaw-snapping Gators, snarling Wolverines and the overwhelming hosting sea of burnt orange.
With under 30 seconds left to play in a game tied at 9-9, captain Liz Calby ’14 cradled the ball behind the net. She glanced at the clock and dished the ball to Jaclyn Leto ’16, who drove toward the middle and spun back, drawing the double team. Calby snuck around the crease and called for the ball. Leto found her. The senior faked the over-the-shoulder shot and pivoted, stashing the ball in the top corner with just 14 seconds left to win the game for the Big Green at Brown University on Saturday.

The women’s rugby team kicked off its season with a training tour through Scotland over spring break. The team returned to the U.S. with a 3-0 record and experience that will help it in its 7s season this spring.
Abbey D’Agostino ’14 made history at the NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., becoming the first woman in Division I history to win the 3,000-meter race and 5,000-meter race national titles indoor in back-to-back years. As a result she was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2014 Women’s Division I Indoor National Track Athlete of the Year, an honor she received in 2013 and in the fall cross-country season.

The men’s ice hockey team finished its season March 15 after a two-game sweep at the hands of the Union College Dutchmen. This was the second consecutive year in which the Dutchmen (28-6-4, 18-3-1 ECAC) eliminated the Big Green (10-20-4, 7-13-2 ECAC) in the quarterfinals.
The men’s rugby team embarked on its annual spring training tour over the break, this year heading to California to take on the University of California, California Polytechnic State University and Santa Barbara City College.
This week, I sat down with Nick Ruppert ’16 of the baseball team. Nick missed almost all of last season with a broken hand, but has returned strong and earned the starting job in center field for the Big Green. The team posted a 2-7 record during its nine-game road trip over spring break. It played tough opponents in the Midwest, facing off against the No. 27 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks and the No. 18 University of Kansas Jayhawks, as of the latest College Baseball poll.
For varsity athletes, spring break means one thing: training trips. Since we are looking to beat varsity athletes, Austin and I figured we should go on training trips of our own. With teammwork taken care of, we struck out on our own paths to prepare physically, mentally and, most importantly, emotionally for the upcoming spring (which won’t likely arrive until Derby or Green Key, unless College President Phil Hanlon sold his soul for a sunny Dimensions weekend).
The baseball team challenged itself over spring interim when it traveled down south to two Big 12 diamonds in Forth Worth, Texas and Lawrence, Kan., to play Texas Christian University, the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the University of Kansas. According to Collegiate Baseball rankings, TCU and Kansas are ranked 27 and 18 in the nation, respectively.
