Since beginning my Dartmouth career, radio stations back home have not intrigued me at all. The same songs are overplayed, and questionable artists get a ton of air time. Do I want to listen to Pitbull and Katy Perry's biggest hits? Yes, every once in a while. Do I want to listen to their songs five times in an hour? Absolutely not. Nevertheless, this is what you find when you go home and listen to the radio stations you once thought were the best when you were in high school.

The Dartmouth women's volleyball team saw its five-game winning streak come to a sudden halt this weekend, as it lost two difficult games to Ivy League opponents. The Big Green fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 3-0, on Friday night, before losing to Princeton University, 3-2, on Saturday.

Four first-half goals led the Dartmouth men's soccer team to a big win over defending Ivy League champions Princeton University on Saturday night at Burnham Field in the team's League home opener. The 4-1 victory ended Princeton's 12-game League winning streak and marked the Big Green's fourth consecutive conference win dating back to last season.

Dartmouth linebacker Luke Hussey '11 Th'12 was named a semifinalist for the 2011 National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award, IvyLeagueSports.com reported. Brown University senior quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero, Yale University senior quarterback Patrick Witt and Columbia University senior offensive lineman Bob Hauschildt were also named semifinalists. The award honors senior student-athletes who excel academically and on the field, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.2, NFF Chairman Archie Manning said in an interview with the website. Manning's sons, Peyton and Eli, both received the accolade before advancing to careers in the NFL. Of the 127 semifinalists chosen, 16 will be named finalists and will each receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. One student-athlete will then receive the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy. Hussey, who is a fifth-year player for the Big Green, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from the College with a degree in engineering sciences.

As the Dartmouth football team prepared to make history in its first-ever night game against the University of Pennsylvania, campus buzzed with excitement last week. Even pouring rain and cold conditions could not stop the Dartmouth faithful from supporting the Big Green on Saturday evening in the first after-dark matchup in the 89-year history of Memorial Field.

Penn (1-2, 1-0 Ivy) quarterback Billy Ragone was the hero on a cold and rainy night in Hanover, leading the Quakers on a 13-play, 89-yard drive capped by a three-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Ryan Calvert with 17 seconds remaining. The touchdown gave Penn a 22-20 victory and silenced Memorial Field as the Quakers rushed onto the field to celebrate.

You walk outside and feel a slap across the face. Slightly stunned, you stumble backwards for a bit, spilling some of the $5.25 coffee you just bought. As your eyes refocus, you notice there is no one around. What could of it have been? As you're searching for answers, it finally hits you: a classic fall breeze. Darn it. You fooled yourself into thinking it'd be at least mid-October before you saw that the summer days are over, and the bitterly brisk season we know as fall is creeping up on us.

The Dartmouth rugby teams saw their fair share of action over the weekend, as both the men's and women's teams opened Ivy League play. The men's team secured away wins against Cornell University, 97-3, and Columbia University, 64-0, while the women's team opened with a 41-12 loss to Brown University at home.

The Big Green (2-3-2) set out to work on defense and to play better as a unit this week in practice. The extra work showed in the first half, as Dartmouth's defense kept UMass (1-8) off the board and did not let many balls get played past them defenders stepped to the ball aggressively, teammates covered their lines and the team was consistently able to clear the ball out of its half.

Former Big Green football captain and baseball star Scott Creelman '64 died on Wednesday after a five-year struggle with cancer, according to Masslive.com. Creelman, who was 68, spent 35 years employed at Spalding Sports Worldwide, earning the positions of executive vice president, president and chief executive officer. While majoring in sociology at Dartmouth, Creelman earned All-Ivy honors and the football team's Bob Blackman Trophy. He led the 1963 football squad to a tie with Princeton University for the Ivy League Championship title. On the pitching mound, Creelman threw 89 strikeouts in the 1963 season, setting what was a single-season record at the time. Creelman attended Melrose High School in Melrose, Mass., where he lettered in three sports and was inducted into the Melrose High School Hall of Fame.

Princeton University's women's lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship on Saturday. The Tigers held on for an 11-10 victory against James Madison University, with Princeton senior goalie Erin Tochihara stopping a last-second shot attempt by the Dukes. Tigers sophomore Charlotte Davis and JMU junior Ariel Lane both registered hat tricks, while senior Lizzy Drumm scored the game-deciding goal for Princeton with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers will meet the top-seeded University of Maryland next Saturday to fight for a spot in the semifinals. The Terps, whose only loss of the season was to the Big Green in double overtime, are the defending national champions.
