First off, on a serious note, Austin and I extend our sincere thanks and gratitude for all of those brave men and women who have and continue to defend our country. Without these heroes, funny (or not so funny) articles such as this one, and the free speech that we are blessed with in this country, would not be possible. Take time this week to thank someone you know who has served in the Armed Forces, whether it’s a friend, family member or classmate.

In a disappointing weekend on the road, the women’s hockey team failed to shake off an early season slump, dropping back-to-back contests against No. 6 Clarkson University on Friday evening and St. Lawrence University on Saturday. Over the road swing, the Big Green (1-6, 1-5 ECAC) was outscored 5-1, and did not score until the weekend’s final period of play.

Dartmouth routed Cornell 34-6 in a game in which the Big Green (4-4, 3-2 Ivy) overtook the Big Red (1-7, 0-5 Ivy) by nearly 300 yards, including almost 250 yards on the ground. The big victory maintains slim hopes for the Ivy League title going into the final two weeks of the season.

Much like their non-athletic peers, Big Green student-athletes spent their six-week break scattered around the girdled earth. While some opted to cross time zones and oceans in pursuit of perfect training locales, others took advantage of the chance to rule campus in deserted Hanover to prepare for the season.

"I think the past nine games have been a roller coaster ride for our team," Jenna Hobeika '12 said. "We'll play well one game and then bad the next game. Overall we've improved from the beginning of the break, but we're still trying to find our team identity and figuring out how we play best together."

Although the early winter season has given many talented freshmen the opportunity to gain experience, the team can't seem to muster the same offensive prowess as their opponents. Dartmouth is looking to improve its team chemistry in order to prepare for the fast-approaching Ivy League season, which begins with a matchup against Harvard University next weekend.

Just two minutes later, the Tigers scored again to take a 2-1 lead. Junior defender Jeremy Goodwin had two shots rebuffed by Grant before he managed to slam a third across the goal line. It was Goodwin's first goal in 43 games.

With 20 seconds remaining in the first period of the golden goal extra time, Dartmouth had a corner kick but seemed to be heading toward another period of extra time. A cross from midfielder Kevin Dzierzawski '13 landed in the box, ricocheting off players from both teams. As the clock ticked down to zero, Skelly controlled the ball and slammed it into the left side of the net past the hands of goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss mid-dive, marking his first goal of the season.

Vince Marriott: The NHL. The status of the labor negotiations never seems to improve, and time keeps on ticking. The recent leak of confidential documents detailing labor talks and the fact the two sides only met for an hour on Sunday leads me to believe that there won't be a pro hockey season this year. The negotiation process, however, has received more media attention than a regular hockey season ever would, so at least hockey is getting some publicity. Something else not to watch for is another Sports Weekly edited by us. It's been real guys, and keep an eye out for the next generation of sports editors taking over in the winter.
