The ink was barely dry on his Dartmouth diploma when former Dartmouth football captain Pete Pidermann '10 headed across the Atlantic Ocean to follow his passion for football. This week, the DM Manual of Style explores the arrogance of fashion fads at Dartmouth. As far as status symbols go, Greek and sports team gear are top currency at the College. Both girls and guys wear their pledge shirts long after the term is over, and it's usually pretty easy to spot varsity athletes on campus they're the ones you see sporting logo-emblazoned T-shirts, jackets and backpacks in The Hop and on the Green.

Dartmouth's social scene is one of a kind: pong, flair and blitz are unheard of outside our bubble, and the exclusivity of our social traditions often borders on vanity.

Three weeks ago, for instance, I heard another tour guide say, "Dartmouth is like Disney World and Hogwarts, combined!" which is like calling Alcatraz an all-inclusive island resort. With this in mind I've compiled and translated a brief list of some things tour guides say as we amble backwards around the campus.

It was only when Nate in my alternate TV universe mentioned his father's alma mater of Dartmouth that I finally snapped out of my pessimistic stupor and realized that I should probably find something productive to do, considering Life after Dartmouth = Upper East Side. That, and I was running out of DVDs.

As a Catholic, I can confidently say that if I had not grown up in a liberal secular environment I would not hold the same religious beliefs I have today. Like many of the religious people I know here, it was only through the process of having to defend my beliefs to my friends and others that I progressed from a nominal faith to the more mature and intellectual convictions I hold today. From debating in classroom to mulling over life's biggest questions, argument and critical examination are necessary in order to holding fully formed views. That is why, as a Catholic and someone who cares about religious issues, I could not be more excited about AHA, Dartmouth's new group for Atheists, Humanists and Agnostics.

I have and will always have a soft spot for Palm and its devices. Palm is the company that made the legendary PalmPilot and it was also largely responsible for popularizing smartphones with the venerable Treo. Lately though, the general public has largely forgotten about Palm. It has been supplanted by the iPhone, BlackBerry or any one of the number of Google Android phones available. However, Palm has made one last stand in the shape of the Pre Plus, and it is quite a good one at that.

"Ameriville" is an incredibly fresh and moving piece that covers a range of current social issues from health care to racism. The No. 48 Dartmouth women's tennis team split its two Ivy League matches this weekend, defeating the unranked University of Pennsylvania 6-1 on Friday and suffering its first conference loss at the hands of No. 28 Princeton University, who beat the Big Green 6-1 on Saturday. The loss to the Tigers crippled the Big Green's chances of taking the Ivy League title for the first time in school history.

Dartmouth is not where relationships go to die. (Clarification: UChicago is still where fun goes to die.) Well, kind of. Students struggle to preserve their high school relationships on college campuses across the nation, but contrary to popular belief, on-campus relationships can and do flourish at Dartmouth. (Full disclosure: I am in a relationship on Facebook with my sister. Actually, she declined my request, so I settled for a real relationship instead.)
