Dartmouth alumni sent more than 1,300 emails to the Alumni Liaison Committee expressing opinions and concerns on academics, student life and administrative initiatives at the College during the 2014-2015 academic year, according to the committee’s annual report to the Board of Trustees. The topics addressed in the greatest number of emails were the “Moving Dartmouth Forward” policy changes and the increased use of living learning communities, according to statistics in the report.

After enough swings, a baseball bat becomes an extension of the clean-up hitter’s arm. Skates define the way a defenseman relates to winter. Jerseys become identities franchise players wear day and night. The game the athlete plays becomes a fundamental part of who he is, and in many cases, that’s a good thing.

When we were approached to co-edit the Homecoming issue, our agreement was instantaneous. The Parker/Lauren partnership dates back to before we even matriculated — when forced to interact constantly as Trippees, we realized we had a love/hate relationship forged in heaven, strengthened on the stunningly rigorous trails of Hiking II and tested in the newsroom, the classroom and the frat basement (Lauren’s pong game is about as weak as Parker’s ankles, which he injured dancing on Trips). One year, a trip to Nantucket and countless arguments later, we had proven that our insult-based relationship would stand the test of time and thought it only appropriate to apply our combined powers to a subject that’s personal, relevant and yet, somehow, still difficult to tackle.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College — a small school in Roseburg, Oregon — and killed nine people. Counting the shooter, who died by suicide, the death tally totaled 10 by the day’s end. “Let me be very clear, I will not name the shooter,” replied Sheriff John Hanlin, whose force was responsible for answering the shooting spree. “I will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this horrific and cowardly act.” This was the correct response — in the face of tragedy, we should remember the victims instead of the murderer, and understand how these catastrophes affect us both as a nation and as individual people.

Propelled by an excellent second-place performance from John Lazor ‘19, the men’s golf team won the two-day Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge in Vermont over 11 other competing teams. After a last-place finish at twelfth in the Fighting Irish Golf Classic a week earlier, the team regrouped to score a collective two-over par (578), successfully holding off second-place University of Rhode Island by four strokes and third-place Harvard University by five strokes.

Brown University: The University released results for its largest-ever campus climate survey that detailed accounts of sexual assault on campus on Monday, administered through the American Association of Universities, the Brown Daily Herald reported. The survey found that the majority of female students who experienced sexual assault did not report the incident and that 25 percent of undergraduate women reported experiencing sexual assault.
Columbia University: A recent survey revealed that the number of sexual assault reports, findings of responsibility and expulsions have increased in the 2014-2015 academic year, the Columbia Daily Spectator reported. Despite this, the university will not require students to re-attend an initiative focused on sexual respect education this semester.

When the Ivy League released its 2015 Football Preseason Media Poll on Aug. 11, the Big Green found itself in an unfamiliar place — second on the list. A ranking this high has not been granted to the Big Green since 1996 when they were rated top of the League and eventually went on to win it all. Despite this new ascension to the upper echelon of Ivy rankings, the Dartmouth football team believes that it is destined for even greater heights.

The College received a record-breaking $325.4 million in gifts and commitments in the 2014-15 fiscal year, the College announced on July 15. This total exceeds last year’s by 27 percent. The Dartmouth College Fund and the annual funds for the Thayer School of Engineering and Tuck Business School also broke records this year.

Although complaints about Hanover weather typically involve phrases such as “brutally cold” and “subzero temperatures,” students and faculty are now faced with a very different issue. With spring in full bloom and summer just around the corner, the sweltering heat is beginning to replace the freezing cold. To make the situation worse, almost all dorms are devoid of central air-conditioning, and per Office of Residential Life policies, students are not allowed to have personal air-conditioning units in College housing. As temperatures rise, window fans are a staple in nearly every room.

Average dues for affiliated students were over $300 for both men and women in the fall of 2014. While the number may seem small compared to the $67,044 net cost of Dartmouth, it poses a financial burden for many students.

If you take a minute to survey the students around you, chances are you will spot more than a few who proudly sport green or black jackets embroidered with their respective sport team’s name. If you do not notice the jackets, maybe you spotted students wearing green Nike shoes or black Nike backpacks with their jersey numbers stitched on the back pocket.

After months of training and preparation, the men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships this past weekend in Philadelphia. After two days of intense competition, the men finished fifth in the team standings with 67 points, while the women finished in seventh with 57.5 points.

After receiving its first bid to the NCAA tournament in program history, the women’s tennis team defeated No. 49 College of William and Mary in the opening round before falling to No. 2 University of North Carolina, last year’s runner-up for the title. The first post-season win for the Big Green provided a culminating end to a season that saw the Dartmouth tennis program reach new heights, despite falling short of the Ivy League title.

The men’s golf team hit the links this weekend for the final time this season as they squared off against the rest of the Ancient Eight at the Ivy League Championships in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Shooting a 921 for the weekend, the Big Green placed sixth and came away 36 strokes behind the top-finishing University of Pennsylvania Quakers.

I spent my spring break doing what most people do — looking up and analyzing the lyrics to top 40 pop hits that are barely relevant anymore. When I read the lyrics to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” however, I had a startling revelation. First, what I’m doing is what a really lonely person might do. Also, “Uptown Funk” is about cocaine.
Right out the gate Bruno Mars pulls the classic lyrical trope of singing a grocery list of things hip-hop artists like. In this case the list includes: this hit, ice-cold Michelle Pfeiffer and white gold. At first I thought "white gold" was some meta-commentary on the practice of defanging music from African-American culture to make it more palatable to a broader — read White — audience. But as I looked into it further I came to one conclusion. Cocaine, baby.

Seventy-nine Dartmouth alumni hope to up the pressure on College administrators to divest fossil fuels through an open letter addressed to College President Phil Hanlon, the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility, originally released on April 2. The letter urges the College to make headway on the divestment of its financial portfolio from fossil fuel companies and informs the school that the undersigned alumni are donating to the Multi-School Fossil Free Divestment Fund instead of the Annual Fund.
