Dartmouth’s Council on Honorary Degrees recently began compiling nominations for potential recipients. Honorary degrees will be awarded at Commencement in the spring, but faculty and members of the graduating class have been requested to offer names of individuals to be considered for the honorary degrees. While we’re sure there are some great ideas, we wanted to be sure to put these names on the table.
Souleymane:Likely the happiest, most iconic and beloved member of the Dartmouth family, it’s time for us to show Souleymane how much we truly appreciate him and offer him an honorary degree. Seeing him at the Hop can brighten anyone’s day, and if there’s anyone deserving of being on this list, it’s him.

This past August, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a second investigation into the College for alleged sex discrimination, which is prohibited by Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments. Administrators chose not to disclose this investigation to the public, leaving us to find out through third-party press reports. This silence stands out from the eager and occasionally self-congratulatory tone typically heard in administrators’ comments on the College’s plans to prevent sexual assault.

This ad from a 1922 issue of The Dartmouth features a "Cake Eater" — the hippest cat around during the roaring '20s. He's dressed to the nines and has all the right moves. Indeed, he "evolved some variations on the cake walk which made them stare." But it turns out this "dandy" isn't the hero of the story. Instead, he serves as an early 20th century reminder to stay in school, with the final line of the page being, "Did he perchance put too much though into the selection of his hats and too little on what went under them?"

Six new residential communities based in current residence halls will begin housing students next fall, the College announced in a press release on Monday. Students graduating later than June 2016 will be randomly assigned into one of the communities in February and will have the chance to request up to five students they would like to be in their house next month. Members of the Class of 2020 will be assigned houses next July when they are given room assignments.

I was in a bit of a scramble this week. After a jam-packed weekend, I could not afford to spend my Sunday evenings in FoCo, as I usually do. I had made plans to order in Boloco with my friend instead. I know – WHO AM I AND WHAT HAVE I BECOME. But alas, I cannot let my dear readers down, my faithful followers who are already dealing with reading my column only every other week.

First of all, I’d like to apologize for and explain the lack of a column last week. I had the misfortune of coming down with a stomach bug for the better part of four days, which denied me my favorite hobby: eating. I lost roughly 15 pounds and experienced severe Collis stir-fry withdrawal. Nevertheless, after four days, I willed myself out of bed, down the stairs and across the 50 feet to Foco. After a few exploratory meals, I was ready to return to my solemn duty as Dartbeat columnist.

The weather is creeping toward frightful, but right now it’s mostly just cozy. Is there anything that cold, grey days lend themselves to better than large mugs of hot chocolate and mountains of blankets? Unfortunately, cozy weather coincides with piles of work, and finding music that both encompasses the coziness of the fall and motivates me to get work done is hard to find.
In times like these, I turn mostly to female vocals layered over complex and pulsating beats. So, this is a playlist my friend put together, and I’m sharing it with all of you. Please listen responsibly.

Last week, dean of graduate studies Jon Kull announced a plan for an independent School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. According to Kull, the school would have more autonomy over budgeting decisions than it presently does. Kull also said that an independent school would improve faculty recruitment and retention. Of all arguments in support of this plan, this one holds the most promise. The College is, of course, nothing without its faculty.

Brown University: Two Brown University students recently launched the Animal Assisted Therapy Program, the Brown Daily Herald reported. The program allows students to sign up online to pet and play with trained therapy dogs in 10-minute blocks. Co-founder Peter Herrera ’16 explained that petting animals often reduces anxiety, depression and blood pressure.
Columbia University: The University raised almost $13 million on its fourth annual Giving Day, a 24-hour social media campaign to raise money for Columbia’s schools and programs. This year’s sum exceeded last year’s total of $11 million, the Columbia Spectator reported. Musician Jason Mraz expressed his support for Giving Day on social media, contributing to the event’s publicity.

I am beginning to think that my travels abroad are less about "studying" and "finding myself" than they are about “Game of Thrones.” Everywhere GoT goes, I follow. During my first trip to Europe, I spent most of my time in Northern Ireland. I watched hundreds of extras line up outside of Titanic Studios in Belfast, and I ate lunch on the rocky coastline where Melisandre gave birth to her demon shadow baby.

Halloween — the day on which some believe spirits walk the earth again to perform their unfinished business — is only days away. As it turns out, Dartmouth has a fairly extensive history with ghosts, as I discovered looking through the special collections at Rauner this past weekend. Not only was I able to say the sentence “yes, I’d like to see the Ghost File,” with a straight face, but I was able to collect information on a few Dartmouth ghosts to share with you all.
