Ifirst noticed her on Monday, a woman in my step aerobics class who was exercising like there was no tomorrow. Every time the class lifted its legs, she kicked hers. When we stepped, she jumped. When we cooled down, she kept going. I saw her again on Wednesday, performing the same spastic movements. I have no doubt she'll be there today.

Afew weeks ago, I decided that I needed some sort of change. I was feeling stifled, stagnated and perhaps even stymied. My life at Dartmouth seemed pretty routine -- classes, activities, friends, the usual. I wanted to alter things in a way that would be subtle, yet effective. And so, I did the only thing a logical, discerning student would do. I changed fonts.

Thestory had all the makings of a juicy spy novel -- espionage, modern technology, national security and the impending visit of the President of the United States. Earlier this week, an alarming blitz was circulated amongst the Dartmouth population stating, "The FBI is monitoring all BlitzMail transmissions on campus in anticipation of the President's arrival at graduation, and there is no law protecting users' rights if damaging material, i.e. explicit language, drug use, etc., is recorded." It all sounded very intriguing. The only problem is the blitz wasn't true.

As we "Women of the Ivy League" are well aware, in one month Playboy Magazine and its team of photographers will make its descent onto our campus. If interested, we are invited to join the ranks of the 16,000 coeds who have competed for coveted spots on the pages of Playboy's college pictorial.

Ever since I realized that this is my last full week at Dartmouth for the next seven months, I've had this weird sort of knotted feeling in my stomach. Sure, I have described the brilliant Dartmouth plan to friends from home who wondered what I was doing taking classes in July. I've sung the praises of off campus programs and leave terms, which might not be possible otherwise. I keep telling myself that this schedule keeps life exciting. Once you're bored here, you're gone.

Taking a break from my studies this past Sunday night, I attended a discussion sponsored by SAGE (Sexual Awareness Through Greek Education). I had joined the group earlier this summer with some hesitation. Although I was certainly aware of the importance of this topic on our campus, I feared that maybe students thought they had already seen and heard it all during Social Issues Night, pledge education and REACT road shows. I wondered if my classmates would be willing to wrestle with this issue yet again.

In the spirit of keeping up with current events, I recently found myself working my way through the pile of Newsweeks that have slowly been accumulating in my room. My attention was piqued by an article entitled, "Merchants of Mediocrity," which dealt with the College Board's decision to raise the average Scholastic Achievement Test scores on both the verbal and math sections to 500. At present, these averages are respectively 424 and 478.

Like a number of other Dartmouth students, I spent Sophomore Family Weekend without my parents.

The whole thing started because I felt sort of guilty. Guilty because I had not done a special tour yet this summer when I knew that as a tour guide I should have volunteered long ago --we are expected to do special tours periodically in addition to our weekly ones.

At Class Day this year seniors will drink a toast from clay cups and then break them on the stump of the Lone Pine.

Bringing to mind images of Wall Street and insider trading, young entrepreneurs at the College recently founded the Dartmouth Finance Club. The club's purpose is to create an informal forum where students may meet and discuss investment strategies, new financial instruments, and national and global economic trends that may affect the markets.

A conference on motherhood hosted by the College this weekend began Friday evening with a panel discussion on the role of motherhood in feminist politics.
