Dartmouth students are quick to discover that Big Green athletes have more to offer than their prowess on the field, court, ice or whatever surface on which they might play. The members of the ski team add more to Dartmouth than a national championship; the swimmers add more to Dartmouth than their dedication to two-a-day practices; and the football players add more to Dartmouth than their annual win over Columbia.

Dartmouth (5-10, 1-5 Ivy) made a habit of inconsistency this season. The Big Green showed flashes in which it was the better team in every game that it played. This held true even in blowout losses to No. 1 Cornell and No. 2 Duke and was especially evident in one-goal losses to No. 3 Virginia and No. 12 Albany. Over the course of its 15-game season, Dartmouth was not able to put together a complete four-quarter effort.

"We play a tough schedule; I don't think it's so much that we're playing on the road," Brian Koch '09 said. "We were right there with Virginia and Albany, and it's just the fact that really, we're just waiting for one of these games to go our way."

For Dartmouth (4-6, 1-3 Ivy), the loss might be attributed to a hangover from the beating it received from No. 1 Cornell on Saturday. The Big Green had hoped to mar the Big Red's perfect season by beating Cornell for the first time in 10 years. Instead, Cornell utilized its relentless ride and fast-paced transition offense to blow the Big Green out 17-3.

The Big Green (4-5, 1-2 Ivy) took an early 1-0 lead on a man-up opportunity less than two minutes into the game. A slashing call on Big Red (10-0, 3-0 Ivy) defenseman Mitch Belisle gave Dartmouth a man advantage, and the Big Green extra-man offense cashed in when Josh Gillam '10 fed Brian Koch '09 for the game's first score.

The men's lacrosse team had the best spring break in terms of wins, if not locale. The team spent its break in Hanover, where the Big Green hosted three games and came away with three wins to even its overall record at 3-3 and jumpstarted its Ivy League season. On March 3, Ari Sussman '10 scored three goals and led the Big Green past No. 17 Notre Dame 7-6 for the team's first win of the season. After a 16-7 win over the University of Vermont on March 20, Dartmouth began its Ivy League season with a battle against Brown. The quadruple-overtime bout was finally settled by Brian Koch '09 on a feed from Nick Bonacci '07. Koch's sudden-death goal gave the Big Green a 9-8 victory and a 1-0 start in Ivy League play. The win streak bumps Dartmouth into 21st place in the latest NCAA rankings, with Ivy League rivals Cornell in first and Princeton in seventh.
