Frances Cha ’07’s debut novel “If I Had Your Face” has been making waves in the literary world. The Guardian praised the novel — a story about four young women navigating the rigid cultural hierarchies, impossible beauty standards and plastic surgery craze of contemporary Korean culture — as a “fizzing, grisly debut.” The Washington Post even likened the book to Bong Joon-Ho’s Academy Award-winning “Parasite.”
Have you ever wondered how museums acquire new pieces and organize exhibits? Since 2002, the Hood Museum of Art has worked to include students in the curatorial process, giving them a behind-the-scenes look into the museum through its Museum Collecting 101 program. The program is offered one term each year to students of all grades and majors, and provides the opportunity for students to select a work — typically a photograph — that the Hood will purchase.
Singing over Zoom is not easy, and neither is coordinating a virtual dance routine or orchestral performance. However, many of Dartmouth’s performing arts groups still meet and rehearse weekly, even though the thing they rely on most — performing — is no longer possible.
“The Sweet Science of Bruising” had its American premiere in Moore Theater last Friday. Written by Joy Wilkinson, the play is set in 1869 London. It tells the story of four women from a variety of backgrounds who find their way into the boxing ring to literally fight for their right to freedom and gender equality.
In the basement of the Hopkins Center lies a commonly undervalued resource — the woodworking workshop. A bright, open space filled with large work tables topped with a myriad of projects in a variety of stages of completion, the woodshop is inviting yet intimidating. There are power tools lining the walls, cabinets loaded with joining materials and walls filled with different types of wood.
In celebration of the Lunar New Year, the Hopkins Center is hosting globally renowned Chinese musician Wu Man tomorrow in a one-time performance titled “Wu Man and Friends: A Night in the Garden of the Tang Dynasty.”Wu Man is best known for her revolutionary work with the pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument similar to the lute. Through the pipa, she is able to masterfully blend time periods and cultures, from ancient to modern and East to West.
It could be argued that one of the most common photographs to be taken is a school photo. The majority of people have been in or seen one. Normally, they are not usually viewed as controversial.
Juliet calls from her balcony, “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” These lines are recognized around the world. However, this time, the story is a little different. Imagine Juliet’s balcony as a modern apartment complex with a Pride parade running through the streets below, and her Romeo being a woman. This was the grounding idea for student-run theater group the Dartmouth Rude Mechanicals’ production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” last weekend.
Shamell Bell, an original member of the Black Lives Matter movement, brings forth her experience as a community organizer and advocate for black activism as a lecturer in the African and African American studies and theater departments. She is currently teaching THEA 1, “Introduction to Theater” and THEA 21, “Race, Gender and Performance.”
When someone mentions the word “pink,” what images come to mind? Maybe you picture a little baby girl in her light-pink nursery, pink-frosted gender-reveal cakes or the new millennial pink that covers dorm rooms and stores across the country. Whatever you think of, it is most likely related to girls and traditional femininity.
