After three weeks without competition, the Dartmouth men's and women's cross country teams were eager and prepared to return to action at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday. On the men's side, top harrier Will Geoghegan '14 finished fifth individually to lead the Big Green to a fourth-place team finish. Abbey D'Agostino '14 coasted to a win in the women's race by 24 seconds, helping the Dartmouth women to a fifth-place team finish.

The Big Green took fourth in the Lake Champlain Open and fifth in both the Boston Harbor Invitational and Nevins Trophy in Great Neck, N.Y. Additionally, Dartmouth sailors finished eighth in both the Mrs. Hurst Bowl on Mascoma Lake and the Hatch Brown Trophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Matt Wefer '14 and Avery Plough '14 dominated in the A Division sailing in club 420s, winning their regatta with 33 points. Scott Houck '15 and Molly Wilson '13 claimed second in the B Division with 40 points. Yale University's boats edged the Big Green for the overall win with 62 points to the Big Green's 73.

Geoghegan finished the eight-kilometer course in 24:43, edging out Syracuse junior Joe Whelan by seven seconds. Tito Medrano a fifth-year senior at Syracuse running unattached because he is out of eligibility was the overall winner, finishing in 24:39.

All of the events will be sailed in Club Flying Junior boats, which are manned by a crew of one sailor and the skipper. The racing will take place on Lake Travis and will be hosted by the University of Texas and the Austin Yacht Club.

D'Agostino qualified for nationals in the 5,000-meter run for the second consecutive year after winning her heat by more than seven seconds in a time of 16:15.35. D'Agostino finished third in the 5,000 meters at nationals last year and has yet to be beaten by a collegian in an individual event this spring.

The Dartmouth men's heavyweight crew team, ranked No. 15 nationally, battled No. 8 Syracuse University in a race for the Packard Cup early Sunday morning on the Connecticut River. Despite a few close races, Syracuse managed to sweep the Big Green, beating Dartmouth's first varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity four and freshman eight boats. Syracuse claimed its third consecutive Packard Cup with the victory in the first varsity eight race.

Some Big Green athletes looked to rebound from subpar performances at last weekend's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, while others used the meets as one last chance to post a qualifying time for the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 24-26 at the University of North Florida.

The Dartmouth men's and women's track and field teams traveled across the Northeast over the weekend to compete in several meets before the start of the spring season. While the weekend served as a final breath of stale indoor air for the majority of Dartmouth's competitors, four speedy athletes used the weekend to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend in Nampa, Idaho.

The Dartmouth men's Frisbee team, which goes by the name Pain Train, defeated some of the top teams in the nation to win the 25th annual Presidents' Day Classic hosted by the University of California, San Diego last weekend.

The University of Vermont, the Big Green's nemesis, won the Carnival with 955 team points. Dartmouth finished in second with 848 points. Host Middlebury College and the University of New Hampshire finished in a tie for a distant third place, each school finishing with 724.5 points. Williams College claimed fifth place with 539.5 points.

Despite the distractions of a venue change and the departure of Nordic captain Eric Packer '12 to Turkey for the U-23 World Championships, improvement in the alpine events and the depth of talent on the Nordic squad led the Big Green to victory at the Williams Carnival over the weekend.

The Big Green won the carnival with a team score of 916 points. The University of Vermont finished second with 735 points, and Middlebury College finished third with 729 points. As expected, the men's and women's Nordic teams stacked the podium. The alpine teams also had several inspiring performances, highlighted by the rise of rookie Ben Morse '14, who won the giant slalom on Friday and placed second in Saturday's slalom.

While a spell of balmy weather this weekend melted much of New Hampshire's snow, forcing the cancellation of Friday's giant slalom event and making waxing skis a challenge, Dartmouth skiers remained unfazed at the University of New Hampshire Carnival. Still, the University of Vermont's prowess in the slalom allowed them to leapfrog the Big Green in the overall standings to win the carnival with 1,021 points to Dartmouth's 873. UNH finished third with 710 points.

D'Agostino finished the six-kilometer course in Terre Haute, Ind., in a time of 19:42.9, just 1.7 seconds behind Villanova University fifth-year senior Sheila Reid, the national champion. Shaw crossed the line in 30:24.8, good for a 54th place finish in the 10-kilometer course.

After men's cross country runner Ethan Shaw '12 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, he will never again lace up his spikes to run for the Big Green. While finales are usually bittersweet affairs, Shaw's final race will be especially triumphant, a testament to the unexpected success of a self-proclaimed "average" recruit.

After running to individual titles two weekends ago at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, Ethan Shaw '12 and Abbey D'Agostino '14 maintained pace at the NCAA Northeast Region Cross Country Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday. With their outstanding performances, both Shaw and D'Agostino qualified to represent the Big Green at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 21.
