The six-week-long “frat ban” for the Class of 2025 was lifted this past Monday. A Greek Leadership Council policy, the ban prohibits first-year students from entering Greek houses with the exception of pre-approved dry events.

The Office of Pluralism and Leadership, in collaboration with other on-campus organizations, will celebrate the identities, history and shared experiences of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community by hosting the annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month from May 1 to May 27. The theme for the month — “Elements” — seeks to emphasize the different groups of people, cultures and backgrounds that exist under the umbrella term AAPI, according to AAPIHM student coordinator Karen Zheng ’22.

In an email sent to the freshman class in late March, the Undergraduate Deans Office announced a new set of D-Plan requirements effective for the Class of 2024 onwards. Under the new rules, students must take one leave term during a fall or spring term of their sophomore, junior or senior years, can fulfill their sophomore summer requirement through abroad or transfer programs and can live in-residence for two terms of their senior year instead of three without petitioning for an exemption to the senior year residency requirement.

On Tuesday, Dartmouth welcomed a total of 1,749 individuals to the Class of 2025 out of 28,357 applicants. Students admitted to the Class of 2025 navigated the admissions process in a year that saw a 33% increase in the number of applicants, pushing the acceptance rate to a record low of 6.17%.

As Dartmouth’s Winter Carnival celebration enters its third and final week, students can attend an interactive event showcasing alumni in the gaming industry or head to the Bema to see a light and sound show, among other programming opportunities. Despite seeing initially low engagement, the extended 16-day, video game-inspired carnival has brought many students online or outside to celebrate.

The College’s Black Legacy Month celebration will kick off Tuesday night with a virtual ceremony highlighting Black culture through poetry, song and art. Throughout February, Black Legacy Month events, which will include community forums and leadership spotlights, will aim to amplify and recognize the Black community on campus and around the country.

A team of Dartmouth engineering students won the award for best technical paper in NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-changing Idea Challenge, or “BIG Idea Challenge.” Their winning idea proposed lunar space exploration robots that can connect with other robots when stuck on rough terrain. It is the second consecutive year that a Dartmouth team, led by engineering professor Laura Ray, has won a NASA BIG Idea award.

Though the pandemic marches on, Dartmouth has moved forward with multiple construction projects, including the completion of renovations to Reed Hall and Baker-Berry Library, the start of renovations on Dartmouth Hall and the continued construction of the new Arthur L. This past Saturday, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and other religious groups around the world celebrated the holiday of Diwali. On campus, Dartmouth’s Hindu student organization Shanti celebrated with a prayer and a celebration, though the event was notably smaller this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

During election week, many Dartmouth students struggled to cope with an extended period of uncertainty. As they waited for ballots to slowly trickle in, students also had to manage the stress that comes with week eight of fall term. Some relied on friends and avoided social media to manage anxiety, while others found comfort in staying informed on vote counts. And while some students are hopeful about the future, others remain worried.

Carefully planned COVID-19 guidelines ensured smooth in-person voting experiences on Election Day in Hanover and surrounding towns. Aside from early morning lines, wait times did not differ significantly from previous years, even with precautions such as temperature checks and voting booth sanitization.

Though ’24s spent the first two weeks of the term largely stuck in their dorms, many have used the post-quarantine period as a time to get outside and explore the area. The Dartmouth Outing Club has offered a wide range of outdoor trips that have been filling up fast.
