From May 2 to 4, Star Trek actor George Takei visited campus through the Montgomery Fellows program. The actor participated in several events, including a fireside chat with the Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association and a talk at the Hanover Inn titled “From Internment to Stardom.” According to the Montgomery Fellows program’s website, the fellowship aims “to bring outstanding luminaries from the academic world as well as from non-academic spheres to campus.” The Dartmouth spoke to Takei about his acting career, background and role as a Montgomery Fellow.

In an email to campus today, College President Sian Leah Beilock announced the Dartmouth Climate Collaborative, a “comprehensive” and data-driven project meant to “address climate change in meaningful and sustainable ways.” In her email, Beilock highlighted the Climate Futures Initiative, a year-long effort launched last week that aims to identify and build on Dartmouth’s current strengths in climate scholarship.

On April 12, Gavin Fry ’25 won a Truman Scholarship for his research on severe weather. Fry was among 60 scholarship recipients selected from a field of 709 candidates, according to the Truman Scholarship Foundation website. Each recipient receives $30,000 to pursue “graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government,” according to the website.

On April 4, the philosophy department and the Neukom Institute for Computational Science hosted University of Oxford professor of jurisprudence Ruth Chang for an event titled, “Does AI Design Rest on a Mistake?” Chang spoke about the alignment problem of artificial intelligence and discussed a possible framework for orienting machine behavior more closely toward human values. The event took place in Haldeman Hall, and approximately 50 community members attended.

On March 4, Dr. Estevan Garcia — a lifelong clinician with extensive expertise in both public health and pediatric medicine — will begin his role as the College’s inaugural Chief Health and Wellness Officer. The College previously announced his appointment on Feb. 8, according to Dartmouth News. In his previous role as Chief Medical Officer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Garcia played a pivotal part in managing the state’s COVID-19 crisis. The Dartmouth spoke to Garcia about his background and plans for mental health on campus.

The Works Cafe, a chain of 11 fast-casual, sustainability-oriented restaurants around New England, opened a new location in Hanover on Jan. 8. The cafe is located next to the Dartmouth Co-Op on 25 South Main Street and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

On Jan. 8, the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy hosted Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., for a speech entitled “Democracy vs. Autocracy in 2024” and a Q&A session with the audience, moderated by Rockefeller Center associate director and senior policy fellow Herschel Nachlis. According to Charlotte Albright in a statement published on the Rockefeller Center website, approximately 250 attendees watched the event in-person, while an additional 19,500 viewers watched a recording of the event by noon the next day.

On Nov. 2, the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Dartmouth Political Union co-hosted 2024 Republican presidential candidate and former Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., as part of the “Path to the Presidency” event series. According to a statement from the Rockefeller Center, approximately 200 people attended the event in person, while an additional 1,000 viewers watched online.

From Oct. 20 to Oct. 22, Dartmouth’s Homecoming weekend featured a variety of events for both students and alumni, including the annual bonfire and parade, the Dartoberfest social, back-to-class lectures, tours, mini reunions and a football game at Memorial Field against Columbia University. The weekend went smoothly and no arrests were made, according to Hanover Police Department Lt. Michael Schibuola, who oversaw the event.

New Hampshire has experienced an uptick in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the fall term, according to the state’s Department of Health and Human Services, with Dartmouth College Health Service documenting 8 active and reported cases in quarantine on campus as of Oct. 1.
