Alpine skiing captain Foreste Peterson ’18 led the Dartmouth Ski Team to a third place finish at this year’s NCAA Ski Championships, among its best results in years. The team captain, from Berkeley, California, has been among the most successful athletes for the Big Green at any level of competition over the last four years, with dual All-American First-Team honors and four All-East First Team honors. Along with this, Peterson competed at the FIS World Cup prior to the normal collegiate season this past fall, making her debut in Soelden, Austria in October 2017.
Dartmouth men’s lightweight rowing has shaken up their training regimen this season with a scientific lactate training program.
The 7s season in women’s rugby is upon us, and the Big Green have high expectations for this upcoming season. Coming off of a tough loss in their first appearance in the NIRA National Championship to Quinnipiac University, the Big Green are looking to make a big statement.
It’s finally here: the NBA playoffs — and along with them, a set of predictions you never wanted. Here’s “Honorable Mention”’s picks, informed by brief Google searches, fantasy basketball and tuning in to the last two minutes of close games.
This past weekend, the United States Associate of Collegiate Fencing Clubs hosted the 2018 USACFC National Championships, in which the Dartmouth College Fencing Club took home a total of eight titles from the team and individual events, earning the overall combined championship title. Unlike most sports which require teams to earn bids for Nationals through regionals or other qualifying tournaments, all collegiate club fencing teams are automatically eligible to compete in Nationals.
Track and Field
To my one reader (hello mother): welcome to week three.
The varsity eight for Dartmouth men’s heavyweight rowing has a new look this season with a trio of freshmen and a mix of three sophomores and a junior replacing their five departed rowers. The crew’s three freshmen, Caleb Edmundson ’21, Evan Dwinell ’21 and Paul Gralla ’21, form an atypically young roster as Austin Heye ’18, Noah Van Dyke ’18 and coxswain Jake Rauh ’18 are the only upperclassmen who have consistently filled varsity eight slots this season.
Dartmouth football head coach Buddy Teevens ’79 officially announced the hiring of wide receiver coach Dave Shula ’81 two weeks ago, marking a drastic change in the football staff for the upcoming 2018-19 football season.
Four years and countless matches later, Alvin Heumann ’18 has reached the end of his incredible career with Dartmouth squash. Having been named to the All-Ivy First Team for his final two seasons, to the College Squash Association All-American team and as the Harrow Squash Player of the Week, Heumann has dominated the courts and been a cornerstone member of the squash team.
In a basketball season marked by parity and scandal, it was only fitting that the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship was won by a team which made one of the most dominant runs in recent history while led by a clean-cut coach, referring both to his lack of involvement in the most recent benefits scandal and to the fact that he’s always dressed to the nines with his suits.
Ian Kelsey ’18, captain of the men’s golf team and one of two seniors on the team, has helped lead a surging Big Green golf team as they look ahead to the upcoming Ivy League Championship in late April. The tournament will be held at Stonewall Orchard, a course just outside of Philadelphia. He claimed his first collegiate title this past weekend at the Cornell Spring Invitational in Florida; it was the first tournament win by a Big Green golfer in nearly two years. Previously, Kelsey has been named First Team All-Ivy and finished second at the Ivy League Championship as a sophomore. He is pursuing an economic major at the College.
Men's Lacrosse
The Final Four is here, and since I’m firmly out of the running for the top spot in my bracket pool after Duke lost last weekend, I was able to enjoy the games more fully and without bias as a neutral fan.
With an overall 7-1 record thus far, the Dartmouth Women’s Lacrosse team has been on fire. As the team reaches the midpoint of the season, it is ranked 19th in the nation — the first time it has been within the top 20 since 2013 — and is recently coming off of two big wins against Ivy League rivals Princeton University and Harvard University.
Honorable Mention: April Showers
After starting the season winless in their opening tournament in Florida and 1-8 overall, Dartmouth softball has begun turning their season around just in time for Ivy League play.
