Dartmouth Soundoff: The Ultimate Winter Carnival Playlist

By Margarette Nelson, The Dartmouth Staff | 2/5/14 7:00am

You know that awkward time between Cutter and going out that happens every Thursday of a big weekend? I mean after you go to FoCo decked out in the flair last term’s roommate left in your possession when he/she went some place warmer for the term.

You make it back to your friend’s dorm in South Mass, and despite your flannel-lined onesie with printed rocket ships, you’re cold, tired and possibly regretting ditching the last half of your 3B to start your night early. Just kidding, who takes 3Bs? Literally, I had to look up what class meets during that time. This DartDorm futon does look really appealing, however. Maybe just a quick power nap, and then you'll go to TDX...Sorry, even I know that’s an old joke, and my last term on campus was 13X. But actually, how about just one episode of “Parks and Recreation”? Or five?

No. Play these songs. All big weekends start out more or less the same. What makes Winter Carnival the runt of the litter is its early peak. I mean, this is the only time Friday class is ever cancelled, and this Saturday will probably be a non-event. You, my friend, are going out tonight.

“Beam Me Up (Kill Mode)” – Cazzette

You can probably see where this playlist is going. Just avoid eye contact with your UGA when you pass him or her on your way to the vending machine to buy Gatorade.

“DNA (Calvin Harris Remix)” – Empire of the Sun

Okay, whether you’re totally over Calvin Harris or were just never that into him in the first place, Empire of the Sun is the main attraction here. Moving right along.

“Climbing Walls” — Strange Talk

Thankfully, this playlist is not non-stop EDM. I don’t see any pong tables here. (Unless you’re in a basement, in which case: stop reading the school newspaper’s blog…)

“Leave Me Behind” – Bauer & Lanford

Wait, Bauer came to Dartmouth sometime in the past five-ish terms, right? No? That was Baauer? There’s a difference?

“Ce Jeu (Tepr Remix)” – Yelle

Yes, this is in French. “Ce Jeu” in English is “This Game.” I just used Google Translate.

“Golden Times (Blinders Remix)” – Goodwill

If you don’t know this one, I promise you’ll recognize “Take You Higher.” It’s the same artist, just without Hook N Sling.

“Believer” – American Authors

Just in case you didn’t know, these guys are playing at Dartmouth on Friday. Time to educate (“Best Day of My Life” is their big hit right now).

“All Night (Cash Cash Radio Edit)” – Icona Pop

I may have a love of Icona Pop so large it could diminish my music-recommending authority. I already mentioned Calvin Harris though, so the damage is probably done.

“Modern Hearts” – The Knocks featuring St. Lucia

The Knocks are more famous, but I like St. Lucia more. How do you think this song made it here?

“Carried Away (Tiesto Remix)” – Passion Pit

Of course I included the obligatory clubby remix of an alt-y/vaguely indie hit. Yelle definitely did not count. Bonus points if you listen to an American Authors club remix at some point. Negative points if it’s dubstep.

“We Sink” – Chvrches

This is off of my favorite albums from 2013. In its place, I could have arbitrarily inserted any one of Chvrches’ more up-tempo songs.

“You Make Me” – Avicii

Sorry if this song — like most things Avicii – is everywhere at Dartmouth. The last time I was on campus was before this single was even released, so I have no way to assess its ubiquity. You must admit though, it’s better than “Hey Brother.”

“Do I (Where We Are)” – Cherub

Like Chvrches, this pick is a bit self-indulgent. Just get to the one-minute mark—skip forward if you must. I promise it’s not a slow track.

“Animals” — Martin Garrix

Love this song? Hate this song? Doesn’t matter. Frackets on, bottoms up, lights off. Hopefully you’re not still wearing that onesie. Oh, it has a secure pocket for your phone and ID? Then by all means, keep it on. Wait, can we stop at Late Night first?
