Re: Dartmouth only Ivy to abstain from signing letter against Trump administration funding cuts
I am proud of College President Sian Leah Beilock and her stewardship of Dartmouth College.
Universities are facing turbulence on many fronts, including issues with student visas and federal funding cuts. Unfortunately, President Beilock is facing criticism for not signing a recent letter in support of Harvard and Columbia.
I am proud that the President did not sign this broadly-based letter, while pledging support to students and peer institutions as needed and appropriate.
I am proud that Dartmouth will address each issue strategically and thoughtfully, with its position evolving as issues develop, always prioritizing the best interests of Dartmouth College.
I am proud that Dartmouth has responded to current challenges by pioneering innovative programs to foster free speech and the civil exchange of ideas.
As President Beilock is leading Dartmouth through all of these challenges and crises, I am confident that Dartmouth will continue to work with and support its peer institutions. I am confident that Dartmouth will continue to work with students and faculty on visa issues and potential changes to funding. I am confident that Dartmouth will continue to support the right of free speech, right to dissent and the pursuit of academic freedom.
