Re: Dartmouth only Ivy to abstain from signing letter against Trump administration funding cuts
To the Editor:
Regarding President Sian Leah Beilock’s non-position on President Donald Trump’s attack on Harvard, let me only add to what others have said. As a ’71, a witness to the position taken by President Kemeny in 1970, I am embarrassed by the College’s stance on the government’s attack on independent universities.
The threat implicit in Trump’s move on Harvard and other universities is reminiscent of the government’s threat to Dartmouth way back in 1819, so famously beaten back by Daniel Webster. It is shameful and remarkably obtuse for President Beilock not to recognize the importance and symbolic weight of joining hands with other institutions in resistance, while dismissing the act as merely “signing a form letter.”
