Track totals 18 first-place finishes

Big Green teams are continuing spring season play in various invitationals and group competitions. Over the weekend, the men's and women's track teams competed at the New Hampshire Invitational held at New Hampshire University, with both teams earning nine event wins. The men's golf team saw more mixed success, finishing a solid sixth out of 12 at the Princeton Invitational.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The men's track and field team brought home nine first-place finishes over the weekend at the New Hampshire Invitational in Durham, N.H. The team turned in a well-rounded performance, placing highly in both the track and field events.

The track team was anchored by Connor Reilly '13, who placed first in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, while the field events were lead by David Irving '11, who finished first in the discus throw and came in second in the shot put and hammer throw.

"Irving did great in the throw, as well as Dom Filiano ['14]," Ben Nollet '14 said.

The Big Green also enjoyed strong performances in the 100-meter dash from Muhammad Abdul-Shakoor '11 and Tyronne DeSpenza '13, who finished in second and third, respectively. Abdul-Shakoor also ran well in the 200-meter dash, finishing second.

"Our strongest event would have to be the short sprints," Nollet said.

In the 400-meter dash, Dartmouth took five out of the top six spots, with Jalil Bishop '14 leading the pack with a first-place finish. Evan Bryant '12, Tyler Ford '11, Kevin Crowley '13 and Hector Reynoso '12 finished from third to sixth place, respectively.

The Big Green took five out of the top six spots in the 1500-meter run, anchored by a first-place finish from John Bleday '14. Dwayne Alexis '11, Mike Danaher '13, Matthew Piece '14 and Graham Keggi '12 filled the third through sixth spots.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The women's track and field team joined the men's team this weekend at the University of New Hampshire and was able to enjoy similar success, also earning nine first-place finishes.

The women one-upped the men in the 1500-meter run, as they took seven out of the top eight spots and swept the top six. Arianna Vailas '14, Abbey D'Agostino '14 and co-captain Chrissy Supino '12 finished first, second and third, respectively.

"The distance girls did a great job," Nollet said. "They're a really strong group."

Co-captain Alex Tanner '11 finished first in the 400-meters with a time of 56.44. Tanner also helped the 4x100-meter relay team of Janae Dunchack '14, Malina Summer '12 and Kristina Black '12 finish in first place.

"[Tanner] really gave strong performances," Nollet said.

In the field events, the Big Green was lead by Cara Vernacchia '13, who finished in first place in the long jump and third place in the high jump.

Christina Alexander '11 and Corrine Kominkiewicz '14 finished in first and second in the shot put, respectively. The two were also able to perform well in the discus, and again placed first and second.

Both the men's and women's teams hope to improve on last weekend's performance when Dartmouth hosts its own event on April 17 against the University of Vermont and Middlebury College.

MEN'S GOLF

The men's golf team finished sixth out of 12 teams at the weekend's Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J.

The team was lead by Peter Williamson '12, who was tied for first after the second round on Saturday and was able to finish the tournament in third place overall.

"He played very consistently," Davis Mullaney '11 said. "He's a very good putter, and a lot of people struggled on the green, and there were a lot of three putts. He doesn't three-putt very often."

Other Big Green golfers placed in the top 25 after Saturday's two rounds of competition. James Pleat '13 and Andrew Janokowski '13 finished in 15th and 22nd place, respectively.

"I'd say [we mostly need to work on the] short game, where a majority of the team is struggling right now," Mullaney said. "Mainly putting we need to spend a lot of time practicing putting. Our short game is the primary area to improve."

The Big Green now has two tournaments left in its season, starting with next weekend's Century Intercollegiate at Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y.
