Applications to the College up 10 percent

Dartmouth received a record 18,130 applications for the Class of 2013, which represents a 10 percent increase over last year's application total, the College announced today. The acceptance rate was down 1.5 percent from last year, with 12 percent of the applicants offered admission.

Approximately 1,090 of the 2,184 admitted students are expected to matriculate, according to a College press release.

The increase in applications may be due to Dartmouth's recent efforts to strengthen its financial aid program, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Maria Laskaris '84 said in the release.

The financial aid office is predicting the total financial aid budget will increase by 13 percent for the 2010 fiscal year, and approximately 55 percent of admitted students will likely receive need-based financial aid, according to the release.

The admitted students from the Class of 2013 are the most diverse in Dartmouth history, with students of color making up 45 percent of admitted students. Men and women were admitted in approximately equal numbers.
