Events like the "greased melon game" at Alpha Delta fraternity, the Kool-Aid boat race at Phi Delta Alpha fraternity and the watermelon-eating contest at Bones Gate fraternity kicked off Fieldstock Wednesday, leading up to the first night of what is pegged as the big weekend of summer term.
Twenty-six teams signed up for the Summer Olympic Games, which culminate with the chariot race on the Green Saturday afternoon. Nine fraternities, eight sororities and nine unaffiliated groups are competing in the week's events. The Summer term Student Assembly treasurer, Miesha Smith '09, expressed excitement over the "healthy rivalry" that emerged from the opening games and the strong showing from non-Greek teams. Competition venues have been specifically chosen to include both Greek and non-Greek spaces.
"One of the best parts of this entire thing is that there are so many different groups participating," Smith said.
Interfraternity Council Programming Chair Anthony Arch '09 noted that the number of teams signed up to participate -- which comprise what he termed the "foundation" for the week -- reflects favorably on the relatively new and unfamiliar Fieldstock.
"We're just really thankful to the teams that have signed up and participated," he said. "It means a lot to try to start something new."
