Crady appointed dean of the College

Thomas M. Crady, vice president of student services at Grinnell College in Iowa, will take over as dean of the College at Dartmouth starting in January, College President James Wright announced Thursday. The position is currently filled by Acting Dean Dan Nelson, who took the post after Dean Jim Larimore left for Swarthmore in August 2006.

Crady has worked at Grinnell since 1982 and has served in his current position since 1998.

"I'm very excited to become part of the Dartmouth community. I look forward to learning more about the Dartmouth culture and working closely with the wide range of Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff. It will be a pleasure and an honor to continue my work in such a strong academic community," Crady said in a press release.

Wright praised Crady's experience and commitment to extracurricular student life.

"Tom's commitment to and experience with undergraduate student life is extensive. He understands the importance of the out-of-classroom experience, and I am confident that all Dartmouth students will benefit from Tom's leadership in this area," he said in the release.

Crady did his undergraduate work at Northern Michigan University where he majored in speech communication. He earned a Ph.D. in education from Iowa State University, where his doctoral dissertation was entitled, "Written and unwritten rules: the use of alcohol by fraternities: a study of one college."
