To the Editor:
In our selection of the 2006 Class Marshals, the Senior Executive Committee attempted to appoint individuals that represent a variety of perspectives in our community, have demonstrated leadership on and off campus and exemplify the spirit of Dartmouth ("Leading by Example to End Divisions," April 28; "Senior class marshals announced; Five of eight positions filled by Senior Executive Committee members," April 27).
Although we still believe that our original slate of Marshals fulfills these criteria and was chosen fairly, we recognize that many in our class feel that our Marshal selection process was unfair and that their voices were overlooked in our decisions.
Also, we realize that because of unfortunate circumstances, this committee started off with a tense and fragile relationship with those it is supposed to represent. Thus, we want to take a step to unify our class and ensure that we all feel that the Marshals on graduation day properly portray the Class of 2006.
Out of the eight Marshals selected, the five who are also members of the Senior Executive Committee will step down.
To fill these five positions, we wish to involve the entire class. Within the next few days we will send out a link to an election site soliciting votes for these Marshal positions.
Each ballot of five votes will include a write-in option to remove any limiting of the nomination processes. The five members of our class with the highest number of write-in votes will be our Marshals.
Please consider the qualities our committee used, as well as any traits you deem worthy, when selecting the five seniors you would like to see join the three previously selected Marshals at Commencement.
