Dartmouth sends 22 to Ivy leaders event

Twenty-two Dartmouth students attended the Ivy Leadership Summit, an Ivy Council event that focuses on discussion pertinent to leadership, in New York City this weekend.

This year's theme was "Leaders in the Age of Technology and Globalization," and students from seven Ivy League schools attended the conference, which included four panel discussions focusing on International Politics and Global Economics.

Harvard University was unrepresented at the event.

According to summit attendee Kazi Kased Ahmed '07, the first panel with business tycoon Steve Forbes and economist Jeffrey Sachs on the topic of sustainable development was the most interesting.

"It turned out to be a debate," Ahmed said, noting that the speakers had very different opinions.

Beily Pan '07 said that the speakers on the first panel were a bit too idealistic, which the conference attendees seemed to realize.

"The students asked a lot of good questions, especially how we could implement a plan to close the gap between the rich and the poor," she said.

"I was more interested in technology and how it would affect governments and companies internationally," Pan said. "I learned a lot of different perspectives from business and governmental standpoints."

Susan Dentzer, the chair of Dartmouth's Board of Trustees, was also present on a second panel concerning media in the age of technology.

According to Julia Hildreth '05, Dentzer "spoke about the changes which have occurred throughout her own lifetime which have allowed greater media access for the general public."

Students also had the opportunity to interact with students from the six other Ivies present at the Summit. Ahmed noted that at meals the students sat at different tables so that they didn't just stay with students from their respective schools.

For Hildreth, the Student Assembly's Student Life committee chair, the Summit encouraged "the importance of being informed and involved as student leaders in the issues and events that affect our nation today."

"In general, it was a great opportunity to meet and connect with leaders from schools across the Ivy League," Hildreth told The Dartmouth.

Dax Tejera '07, who is also a member of The Dartmouth staff, is the College's Ivy Leadership Summit liaison.
