Editors' Note: Winter Carnival 2004

Winter in Hanover " it's cold, long and dismal. But for one weekend, it is embraced and celebrated by virtually everyone on campus. This was the vision of Dartmouth Outing Club founder Fred Harris '11, and it has become a reality.

For over 90 years, students have set aside their work and their worries to appreciate all that winter in Hanover has to offer. We encourage you to do the same this weekend.

Don't just stand there shivering in the cold -- dive into the Polar Bear swim and embrace it. Don't just admire the 30-foot tall Cat In The Hat in the middle of the Green -- join forces with friends from your dorm or any other campus group and build an inspiring (or preferably humorous) sculpture of your own. Don't just treat this party weekend like any other -- realize that you have no excuse to not be having a great time for four straight days. It's Winter Carnival -- don't treat it as just another weekend.

In light of the recent controversy surrounding the administration and the Greek system, we hope Winter Carnival helps students to remember that Dartmouth College is still a place where students can revel in tradition and kick back with friends. This is a fine institution for learning, but also for fun. Never forget the fun.
