While many are looking forward to this weekend's Tubestock events, few consider it to be on the same level as the College's recognized weekend celebrations, such as Green Key or Winter Carnival.
A reason for this is that, despite the large gathering on the river tomorrow, the prohibition of registered parties in Greek houses has spread the focus of festivities to various locations, scattering the campus among many off-campus and private house parties.
Hawkeye King '00, who has already attended three Tubestocks, said that this weekend does not compare to other 'big weekends' because of the fact that the parties do not go on for an entire weekend, but rather, merely as a one-day event.
Despite this, King is looking forward to tomorrow.
"I like the fact that it's a celebration of the water," he said. "The whole campus goes down and appreciates the Connecticut River."
Roy Ogura '02, who is looking forward to sitting in the Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity raft and enjoying the music tomorrow, said that although the weekend may not be as well-attended as other traditionally festive weekends, it will be just as fun.
"I'm very excited," he said. "We might be the only place in the world at that moment that has something like this going on."
Most people knew they were going to the river tomorrow, but did not make plans for tonight or tomorrow night, preferring to wait and see what would come up.
However, most said they would still look to the Greek system for entertainment, although competition will arise from off-campus houses who are currently making preparations for their parties.
They are not subject to registration rules of the College, and will be allowed to serve alcohol to adults over the age of 21.
Although fraternities such as Sigma Nu and Sigma Phi Epsilon are holding dance parties open to the campus, other fraternities like Gamma Delta Chi will have smaller, private gatherings.
"I'm sure tomorrow night people will want to take it a little easy because Saturday is supposed be such a fun time with everybody going crazy," Gamma Delt Social Chair Daniel Anderson '02 said.
Sig Ep Social Chair Felix Ungar, however, has a different opinion. When asked where he thought most of the campus would be socializing on Friday night, he confidently answered, "Sig Ep."
Many Dartmouth alumni and friends of students are also expected to visit, making the campus look a little more like other, more populated terms.
"I know a lot of people are coming up to visit. It'll be fun to see them," Julia Cumming '02 said.
"[Tubestock] will be pretty exciting, pretty different. Everyone always says Tubestock is the best weekend at Dartmouth," she added.
