Class elections to be conducted by Blitzmail: Brown, Buchman and Phinney in race

The resumes of three members of the Class of 2000 will be affected by the results of a simple electronic-mail ballot on Tuesday.

According to Summer Council President Paul Holzer '00, this year's election of the Class president will be via BlitzMail. Election ballots for the three presidential candidates -- Joseph Brown '00, Eric Buchman '00 and John Phinney '00 -- will be sent to all members of the Class on Tuesday at around 11 a.m.

Normally, such elections are held over the Internet with a special website where students can vote.

However, the student who constructed the site last year was not available for this election, Holzer said.

The Council decided to do the election through e-mail because they had no resources for a World-Wide-Web-based election, which is "more complex than people think," Holzer said.

Once they receive their ballots, students will have until 11 a.m. on Wednesday to reply to the sender with their choice for president, Holzer said.

Holzer said the Election Planning and Advisory Committee will then tally the votes and release the name of the winner late Wednesday night.

The members of EPAC are Matt Benedetto '00, Student Assembly President Josh Green '00, Holzer, Green Key representative Anne Kneedler '00 and Will Schoen '00. Student Activities Director Mark Hoffman is EPAC's faculty advisor.

Tonight at 8:30, after the Council meets, the four candidates for president and vice president will have the opportunity to speak for a few minutes, Holzer said. The speeches will be in Collis 101.

Lauren Hickey '00 is the lone candidate for vice president.

EPAC published a pamphlet with information on the candidates last week. The pamphlet was mailed to all members of the Class of 2000.
