For the second game in a row, the Big Green field hockey team was unable to maintain an early lead, as Dartmouth fell to a tough University of Massachusetts squad 2-1 yesterday afternoon at Chase Field.
Last Sunday, Dartmouth led the Cornell Big Red 2-1 before losing 3-2 in double overtime. And again, the Big Green could not hold on, despite outshooting the Minutewomen 15-14.
At the 15:20 mark, Weze Shorts '99 shot in Dartmouth's first and only goal of the day. She tipped in a Jen Karlen '98 shot from inside the circle. But just seven minutes later, UMass responded, as Courtney MacLean took an assist from Saskia Fuchs and tied the game at 1-1.
Both teams struggled to overcome the adverse conditions as constant showers of rain fell upon Chase Field.
In the second half, UMass' MacLean found the net again at the 8:23 mark from a Erica Johnston pass.
In the goal, Big Green keeper Kendra Kosko stopped nine shots, while the Minutewomen's Hilary Rose saved 12.
The Big Green, now .500 at 8-8 overall (2-3 Ivy), end their season Saturday at Harvard. Game time is 12:00 p.m.
