The Dartmouth

Ski team competes at Bates

The Dartmouth men's and women's ski team kicked off their season last weekend with a third place finish at the Bates Winter Carnival.

Dartmouth finished with 527 points, but the Big Green were well off the pace of the top two finishers, the University of Vermont and the University of New Hampshire, which finished with 585 and 584 points respectively.

The men's nordic team began the weekend Friday, by finishing a disappointing fifth place in the three by five kilometer skating relays.

The women did not fair much better in their race, as they also earned a fifth place finish.

"The nordic teams really had a rough weekend because of the weather and all of the injuries," Andy Martin'96 said.

The alpine teams did considerably better on Saturday and actually took home two individual titles.

Jen Collins '99 began her collegiate career in style with a victory in the women's slalom and a time of 88.34 seconds. Laura Turner '98 and Kylie Booth '99 also had top 15 finishes in the women's slalom.

For the men, Martin was victorious in the men's slalom competition with a time of 89.59 seconds. Ben Robinson '97 also raced well and earned a third place finish with a time of 90.69 seconds.

These two Big Green performances, as well as a strong showing from Captain Jeremiah Thompson '96, helped the Dartmouth men earn first place in the alpine portion of the Carnival.

"The men's alpine team skied about how we expected, but some of the other teams had disappointing weekends," Martin said. "Our expectations for next weekend are much higher."

The Big Green ski team will be in action this coming weekend as the Big Green head to Lake Placid, NY for the St. Lawrence University Carnival.
