Water polo team to hold tourney

The Big Green water polo team will host the New England Division Regional East tournament at Alumni Gym's Karl B. Michael Pool beginning at 12:00 p.m.Saturday.

The tournament is one of the Eastern qualifying tournaments for the New England championship tournament held at the end of this season.

Because of its strength in the League, Dartmouth will be able to enter three teams in the tournament including a men's A and B squad as well as the women's team which formed last spring.

Only one team from Dartmouth will be allowed to advance to the Championship tournament.

The men's A team, with a preseason national ranking of four, is favored to dominate the competition. But because water polo is only a club sport, they have been limited in the amount of time the Big Green have had to prepare for the tournament.

"We aren't really able to come here too early," player Howie Silverman '97 said. "We got here Sept. 11, and we've been trying to get in shape since then."

The men's A team will be led by Silverman and Captain Jon Kenyon '97. Freshmen Dan Alfonso and Kenny Kriwanek will also join the Big Green's squad and look to make impacts in the water.

The men's B team and the Dartmouth women the only women's team in the tournament, will lead off the competition playing each other Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The men's A team will follow at 1:15 p.m. playing Bates College.

Later in the afternoon, the women will have two more matches against Boston University and Colby College, while the men's B team will play Bowdoin College. The A squad will finish the day taking on Middlebury College at 9:30 p.m.

The next morning, the Big Green will start earlywhen the Dartmouth B team plays Colby College at 9:00 a.m.
