Crew team hires freshman coach

After filing through a pool of applicants ranging from varsity head coaches to high school coaches, Dartmouth's heavyweight crew coach Scott Armstrong recently named Will Porter the new assistant coachof freshman boats for the upcoming year.

Porter, a 1990 graduate of Rutgers University, has been coachingfreshmenthere for the past fouryears. He will jointhe Big Green squad this fall.

"We had an outstanding pool of applicants," Armstrong said. "I chose Will because he has proven to be successful in our league. His crews have beaten us and he's hungry."

While coaching, Porter has also continuedinternational competition. He was a silver medalist in the PanAmerican Games, and in 1993 he won a bronze medal in the World Championships.

Porter, hired for a 10- month contract, will arrive in Hanover in September. The Big Greenlooks forPorter to use his experience as a rower and as a coach to lead the freshman program to success this fall.

"He is going to add determined leadership at the freshman level," Armstrong said.

Because freshman are often impressionable by first experiences, Porter will play an instrumental role in building up the team for future success.

"The coach at that level is extremely important," Armstrong said.

"Freshman year is a time to develop attitudes, work ethic and determination, and a good freshman coach will do those things as well as teach good rowing technique."
