Mishima's 'No' plays focus on modernizatin of Japan

Written by one of Japan's premiere 20th century writers, Yukio Mishima, three "No" plays were performed yesterday at the Moore Theater.

Directed by Mara Sabinson, chair of the department of drama, the plays opened last night and will continue through till May 10.

The most striking aspect of the plays is Mishima's remarkable departure from tradition. "No" plays are usually stylistic dance dramas performed by masked male actors. Mishima, however, manipulates the contexts of the plays, adapting them to contemporary settings which emphasize the tension experienced by traditional Japanese as their country became increasingly Westernized.

Tickets for the "No" plays are available at the Hopkins Center box office. Admission is $2 for undergraduates, $5 for graduate students and $7 for reserved seats.
