Climbing wall free today

This afternoon from three to eight is demo-day at the Jonathan Belden Daniels Memorial Climbing Gym.

An additional women's day is scheduled for the same hours Monday.

No experience is necessary to attend, and the use of the wall, instruction and equipment are all available free of charge.

The gym, located in a converted squash court in the basement of the Maxwell Apartments, offers routes of all levels, a bouldering cave and overhanging climbs.

The usual costs are five dollars per day or 18 dollars for a season pass.

Both events are sponsored by the Dartmouth Mountaineering club, an organization within the Dartmouth Outing Club that does activities including rock climbing and winter mountaineering.

The gym opened last Fall term.

Its regular hours are Monday through Friday from two p.m. until 10, and weekends from two until eight.

It was paid for with a gift from the Jonathan Beldin Daniels's family.

They wished to remember him, and his passion for climbing and mountaineering, by creating a facility on the Dartmouth campus that would foster climbing and so keep Daniel's spirit and leadership qualities alive.

Daniels was killed in a mountaineering accident in Poland.
