The Dartmouth

Heps preview

In the outdoor track season, there are the Heptagonal Championships and nothing else. That weekend has arrived for the men and women's track teams as they prepare to head off to Brown for the Heps.

"This is the meet that is really the measure of our success," Coach Carl Wallin said.

The Heps are the first - and only - scoring meet for both teams this season and include all eight Ivy League teams along with Army and Navy.

While Navy, the indoor winner, is the favorite, both Dartmouth teams will probably finish within the top half of the competition.

The strength for both teams, as always, is in the middle and long distance events and the throwing events.

Jon Fidelak '93, Mike Hughes '93, Dennis Webster '93 and Aaron Culliney '96 combined to win the 4x800-meter relay at Heps this winter. The 4x800 is not run in the spring, but the four comprise one of the most solid middle distance line-ups that will head to the starting line in Providence. Hughes and Chris Foley '95 look strong in the 1500-meter race.

For the women's middle distance, Kristin Cobb '95 has a strong bid for a first place finish in the 1500-meter, and Maribel Sanchez '96 has been promising this spring.

Amy Cashion '94 will be competing both in the middle distances, in the 1500-meter race, and the long distances where she leads Dartmouth in the 3000-meter race.

For the men's long distance events Ted Fitzpatrick '95, Derek West '95, Aaron Bouplon '96 and Kai Richter '95 are Dartmouth's best bets for points.

In the field events, Gerry LaMontagne will place in the discus, Kurt Cohen '95 and Dave Erikson '96 are strong in the shot put, Ken Forster '95 is solid in the javelin, and Dan Heinold '94 and Scott Shimooka '95 are a potent pair at the pole vault.

The women throwers are led by Marianne Chamberlain in the hammer throw, Amy Winchester '96 in the shot put, and Marla Milkowski '93 in the discus.
