The College has received a $50-million gift the largest in the College's 240-year history from an anonymous donor, the Board of Trustees announced on Friday at its June meeting, the last of College President James Wright's tenure. The Board also decided to proceed with elections for alumni-selected trustees, ending a previous "freeze" on the replacement of the Board's alumni-elected members.

Dartmouth Medical School will lay off 12 staff members and cut approximately 10 percent from its $237-million operating budget as part of the College-wide effort to reduce expenditures by $72 million over the next two years, DMS Dean William Green said an interview with The Dartmouth. The layoffs will go into effect on a rolling basis throughout July. No grant-funded or faculty positions will be cut, Green said.

The proposed formal affiliation between the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic and Catholic Medical Center in Manchester has come under fire as pro-life and pro-choice advocates have questioned how the new relationship will affect standing policies on abortion and end-of-life care. The intent to affiliate was announced in February.

The Ledyard Canoe Club's Titcomb Cabin burned down at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday night in what Hanover Police are calling a "suspicious" fire, according to a police press release. The cabin, located on Gilman Island on the Connecticut River, was frequently used by the Dartmouth Outing Club.

Following his April 9 open letter criticizing the College's recent budgetary decisions, anthropology professor Hoyt Alverson has written a second letter on the topic, which he released on Wednesday. Alverson's second letter was a reply to an April 15 statement from Provost Barry Scherr and vice president for finance and administration Adam Keller addressing Alverson's original criticism.

The Tuck School of Business was ranked eighth in U.S. News and World Report's annual ranking of graduate schools, which was released on Thursday. Tuck slipped down one spot from its position last year. The business school rankings are based on a quality assessment by peers and recruiters, graduate placement success and student selectivity, according to the report. Dartmouth Medical School was ranked 22nd for primary care and 35th for research after being ranked 13th and 31st, respectively, in those two categories last year. The Thayer School of Engineering was ranked 54th, up three spots from last year.

This year's candidates for student body president all chose to employ traditional campaign tactics -- including the creation of Facebook groups, posters and chalking -- but, despite superficial similarities, each candidate's campaign teams differed in both size and philosophy, and achieved varied results throughout the campaign period.

College President James Wright will throw the first pitch when the Boston Red Sox face the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on June 6, according to a College press release. The Red Sox are honoring Wright, an avid sports fan, for his 40 years of service at the College and his leadership in assisting military veterans attend institutions of higher learning, the release said. Wright served three years in the U.S. Marines before attending college. He began visiting wounded veterans in 2005 and worked with Congress to make college more accessible for former members of the armed forces, according to the release. "The Red Sox are a remarkable institution, and I admire their rich history, excellence on and off the field, and the commitment of their fans," Wright said in the release. "This will be a memorable honor."

Anthropology professor Hoyt Alverson criticized Dartmouth's spending on projects that he believes are peripheral to the College's academic mission in an open letter to the Board of Trustees, College administrators and all faculty members last Thursday. Alverson said he wanted to spur dialogue about the budget because he believes the "campus was quiet and passive" when the administration announced budget cuts in February, he said in an interview with The Dartmouth. Alverson sent the letter two days after Dean of the Faculty Carol Folt's annual address to the faculty, which touched on the budget.'

Dartmouth's Board of Trustees voted not to reelect Trustee Todd Zywicki '88 for his second term on the Board at its April meeting this weekend. The Board also evaluated campus-wide budget cuts and fundraising efforts at its meeting, calling for an 11-percent cut from Dartmouth Medical School's $230-million budget by 2011 in an effort to meet College-wide budgetary objectives.

Engineering Ph.D student Colin Carpenter Th '09, confronted with hiring freezes at major corporations, has broadened his initial job search to include post doctoral fellowships in academia. Carpenter is not alone in this approach, and as students finishing their fellowships also have difficulty finding jobs, more fellows entering the market may further aggravate the problem.
