There was a time when Ridwan Hassen ’15, one of five children of refugees from Somalia and Ethiopia, considered dropping out of high school so he could work full-time to support his family. But he stayed in school, Hassen said, crediting encouragement from an influential statistics teacher. On Saturday, he was named a Rhodes Scholar.

Town officials say they hope to see solar panel arrays become a more regular feature in Hanover. Roughly 200 people attended an informational meeting at Hanover High School on Thursday to discuss the Solarize Upper Valley initiative, which aims to capitalize on government financial incentives and collective buying power to equip as many as 300 Upper Valley homes with solar power in the next year.

In five years, the College aims to have minority and international professors comprise 25 percent of its faculty. At Monday’s termly meeting of the faculty of arts and sciences, Provost Carolyn Dever and College President Phil Hanlon discussed increasing minority and international faculty at Dartmouth, describing it as a major priority to the around 200 faculty members in attendance.

Planners, pens and gag gifts will give way to handbags and accessories when College Supplies closes its doors early next year to make room for an expanded Lemon Tree Gifts. The home decor and gift shop will take over the store’s premises at 28 South Main Street, which has housed College Supplies for more than 40 years.

Construction on a new building at the Thayer Engineering School may begin as early as 2017, vice president for campus planning and facilities Lisa Hogarty said. As part of the expansion process, which is also expected to include increases in faculty and course offerings, Wilson Architects is evaluating space needs and exploring potential designs and locations for a third building.

Last week, the TransCanada Corporation took the latest step in a six-year relicensing process for the Wilder Dam, which spans the Connecticut River between Lebanon and Hartford. Wilder is the largest of five Connecticut River dams – three of which are operated by TransCanada – up for relicensing in 2018, a process that has sparked discussion about the dam’s environmental impact.

The “Moving Dartmouth Forward” presidential steering committee will likely propose amendments to alcohol policy as part of its recommendations to reduce harmful behaviors at the College. The committee’s research follows changes in alcohol policy at peer institutions, including approaches that ban hard alcohol, prohibit drinking games and encourage open doors at social gatherings in residence halls.
