The schedule makers at Dartmouth aren't stupid. After last year's Homecoming loss to Harvard, the powers that be in the athletic department decided that this year's Homecoming should be a guaranteed win to send the students and alumni home happy. Considering that Dartmouth has beaten Yale the past eight seasons, held the Bulldogs to 20 points in the last three contests and humiliated them 40-6 two years ago on Homecoming, the boys from New Haven seemed to be the perfect candidate for the Big Green.

Celebrating their first win of the season last Saturday, the Big Green were wise enough not to look at the schedule for fear it might spoil the party. Dartmouth's reward for knocking off Lafayette is the chance to play Colgate, the best team the Patriot League has to offer and the one of the best offenses the nation has seen this year.

Three years ago, Lafayette came to Memorial Field to face an inexperienced Dartmouth squad that was winless on the season. With strong defense and just enough second-half offense, the Big Green earned a come- from-behind victory to defeat the Leopards, 14-7. To say that Dartmouth was able to build on that victory is an understatement. The Big Green then proceeded to go 24-1-1 in its next 26 contests,

The Big Green women's tennis team found out all too well yesterday that home is not always so sweet. Returning home after a successful weekend at Penn, the Green dropped a tightly fought 5-4 match to Boston University, a result that could just have easily swung the other way.

Heading into the 36th and final hole of the weekend, Chris Welty '00 knew he was playing well. What he didn't know was quite how well. Despite three-putting the 18th hole for the second straight day, Welty was able to walk into the clubhouse and find out that he had won the Dartmouth Invitational by one stroke. Welty's peformance helped lift Dartmouth to a tie for fifth-place overall.

Following a tough loss at the hands of Ivy rival Penn, the obvious solution for the Big Green football team would be to try and look ahead to the next opponent and tell yourself things will be different. Unfortunately, a quick glance for the Big Green might provide more anguish than joy as looming on the horizon tomorrow is the Big Green's toughest opponent of the season, Maine.

Spring is coming to a close and believe it or not, the next sporting event to take place on campus will be September 19, when the Big Green football team opens its 1998 campaign against Ivy League rival Penn.

In the previous few weeks, members of the Big Green track squads noted that the IC4A and ECAC championships for men and women respectively were merely meets to showcase individual talent rather than team efforts. This past weekend at George Mason Universtiy in Fairfax, Va., nobody did more to deserve the individual spotlight than the Big Green's decathalete, Greg Johnston '99.

Though the team boasts the Ivy League's leading scorer and leading rebounder, Big Green men's basketball head coach Dave Faucher knew his team needed an impact player to improve on last year's 7-19 record. In fact, the search was narrower than that for Faucher. He needed an impact player at one position, point guard.

Rebecca Dirksen '00 and Allison Taff '00 come from opposite ends of the country. They have different styles of tennis and they bring different attitudes towards the game. They don't even agree on what clothes to wear in warm weather or who should answer which questions. That seems what you should expect from the tall, blonde girl from California wearing the dress and the talkative, brown-haired Easterner whose long sleeves refuse to admit the sun is shining.

When trying to assess the Big Green men's crew performance at Eastern Sprints this past weekend, one needs to look no further than the sentiments of men's crew coach Scott Armstrong:

For those track athletes that are headed to next week's championships, this past weekend served as excellent tuneup. For those athletes who concluded their season at the New England championships with strong performances, there are many positives to build on for next season. Perhaps the biggest winners of the weekend were the complete men's and women's squads, who jumped out to early leads and fought valiantly to land finishes in the top 10.

After just missing the ECAC playoffs this season, its hard to imagine that the men's hockey team has anywhere to go but upwards. However, after losing an influential group of nine seniors, it was imperative that head coach Bob Gaudet and his coaching staff find a group of young talent that hopefully could come in and contribute to the Dartmouth program immediately. A very tough task to ask of a coach in his first recruiting season at the helm of the Big Green hockey program.

On a day that saw the members of the winningest senior class in Dartmouth history play their final game, the Big Green baseball team also saw a glimpse of the future. In the end, everybody was celebrating as the Big Green finished their season with a 5-0 shutout of twin-state rival Middlebury at Red Rolfe Field yesterday afternoon.

There was a hit parade yesterday at Red Rolfe Field and the Big Green baseball team was the guest of honor. Dartmouth pounded out a school-record 26 runs, their highest total in the past four years, to squeak by Holy Cross, 26-6, in a non-conference battle.

The Big Green continued to struggle in mid-week games as they fell to UMass-Lowell, 7-3, at Red Rolfe Field yesterday. The loss drops Dartmouth to 19-10 on the year, but only 2-3 on games played during the week.

Facing elimination from the Red Rolfe Division pennant race, the Big Green baseball team ironically turned to the number four. No, All-American shortstop Brian Nickerson '00, who sports number four on his uniform, did not return to action. But the Big Green did win four crucial games over the Brown Bears in Providence thanks to the power of first baseman Aaron Meyer '00, who belted four homers in the four victories.

Two outs. Runner on second base. Dartmouth trailing 4-3 in the eighth inning, down to its final at-bat. The Big Green batter steps in for the biggest at-bat of the young season and stares down the opposing pitcher, right? Wrong. The batter steps in unable to shake that smile that is as recognizable as the grin on the Mona Lisa.
