Abbey D'Agostino '14 finished second at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Saturday at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., completing the six-kilometer course in 19:28.6, less than a second behind Iowa State University's Betsy Saina (19:27.9).

On the men's side, the Big Green is joined this year by seven freshmen, highlighting the youth of a squad that carries only one junior, Tyler Melville '14, and one senior, co-captain Matt Labove '13. Important contributors from last season, guard R.J. Griffin '13 and forward Nick Jackson '14, left the team during the offseason.

While each team relies on an individual trip planner who helps with specific travel arrangements often an assistant coach the logistical burden of planning athletic trips ultimately falls on Rhonda Summarsell, travel assistant in the College Athletic Business Office. After schedules are finalized, Summarsell is presented with the daunting task of ensuring that student-athletes arrive safely and on time to their destinations. Summarsell also must ensure that Dartmouth trips comply with all Ivy League and NCAA Division-I requirements.

The women (12-4, 5-1 Ivy) are first up and will take a six-game win streak into their game against Cornell University at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Although Dartmouth cannot win the Ivy championship outright, a win against the cellar-dwelling Big Red (1-13-1, 0-5-1 Ivy) would guarantee that the Big Green finishes no lower than second. If second-place University of Pennsylvania (9-5-1, 5-1 Ivy) can knock off first-place Princeton University (12-3-1, 6-0 Ivy) and Dartmouth can beat Cornell, then Penn, Princeton and Dartmouth will finish in a three-way tie for first place, sharing the Ivy League title. The conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament would be decided by a coin toss.

A recent study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience provides insight into how the brain handles bodily navigation and corrects errors by making adjustments that allow it to locate its starting point. The study was conducted by psychology professor Jeffrey Taube and his former postdoctoral assistant Stephane Valerio.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Maggie Hassan spoke to 20 students in One Wheelock on Friday, briefly discussing her background as a state senator before elaborating on her "innovation plan" to strengthen New Hampshire's economy and contrasting her policies with those of Republican candidate Ovide Lamontagne. In the 40-minute appearance, Hassan also addressed her education policy, calling for a tuition freeze for the New Hampshire state university system and better science, technology, engineering and mathematics standards in grades K-12. In a question-and-answer session following her talk, Hassan responded to student concerns about new voter ID legislation, promising to fight for student voting rights.

Savage, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, opened the scoring just five minutes into the contest with a one-time shot off of a centering feed from Sam Anderson '14. Four minutes later, Savage converted again on a loose ball rebound before finishing off her strong first-half display in the 23rd minute with a redirected goal on a pass from Sam McPherson '13, who notched her first assist of the season. Factoring in a final unassisted goal in the second half, Savage has now scored six goals in the last two games and leads the team in goals scored with nine. The 5'9" forward also set a personal mark for most goals scored in her collegiate career.

In a dominating first-half display, the Big Green consistently dictated the pace of the game and scored from a variety of situations. Sam McPherson '13 opened the scoring for Dartmouth in the 10th minute of play with her second goal of the season, but the Bulldogs responded just 52 seconds later with a tally by Brooke Gogel.

Having anticipated an enrollment increase with the elimination of an SAT-based exemption for Writing 5, the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric has seen a smooth transition facilitated by nine new sections of Writing 5 and the hiring of six new faculty members, according to Institute director Christiane Donahue. This fall, 110 more first-year students are enrolled in Writing 5 courses than last year, with another 46 opting to enroll in the Humanities 1 and 2 sequence, according to the Office of the Registrar.

Two minutes into the second overtime period, Pepperdine winger and leading-scorer Amanda LeCave secured the game's only goal. Receiving the ball on the right flank, she made an overlapping run that opened up space to cut in onto her left foot and send a curling shot into the top left corner that escaped the reach of Big Green keeper Tatiana Saunders '15.

In a heartbreaking loss, the Big Green fell to Princeton University, 2-1, in overtime on the road on Saturday. Despite a valiant effort by Dartmouth goalkeeper Noah Cohen '14, the Big Green (3-5, 0-1 Ivy) came up short in its Ivy League opener, making this coming Saturday's home game against Yale University all the more important.

Displaying a potent offense, the Big Green found the net early and often against Holy Cross (1-8), scoring its first goal after only nine minutes of play when Liz Blanken '13 converted a penalty stroke for her third goal of the season.

After the team notched its third straight shutout, co-captain and center back Aurelia Solomon '13 said she was extremely pleased with how the Big Green defense has performed recently.
