When Will Geoghegan ’14 crossed the finish line on Saturday at the Terrier Invitational at Boston University in 3:58.04, he crossed into the history books as well. The senior from Brunswick, Maine, ran the fastest mile in the nation this year, breaking Dartmouth and Ivy League records.

The gun went off, and Abbey D’Agostino ’14 shot to the front of the pack. Less then one lap in, she cleared the field, going on to win the women’s 1,000-meter race in 2:46.88, over seven seconds ahead of the second-place Columbia University runner. Overall, the Big Green women came in second in the Ivy League tri-meet Saturday at Leverone Field House, while the men easily took home first.

Four years, five All-Americans and a cross country Ivy League Heptagonal Championship later, Big Green women’s cross country head coach and track distance coach Mark Coogan is leaving the College for New Balance. Starting Jan. 15, he will begin his work as a member of New Balance’s running sports marketing division, a position that will include coaching New Balance elite athletes.

The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams began the winter season with successful showings at the Harvard Open on Dec. 7 in Cambridge, Mass., and at the Jay Carisella Invitational on Dec. 14, hosted by Northeastern University in Boston. Five Dartmouth women also competed at the University of Rhode Island’s pentathlon, where Janae Dunchack ’14 came in first place with 3,760 points, ahead of 19 other competitors.

Abbey D’Agostino ’14 won the NCAA Division I championship in cross country, Saturday Nov. 23rd in rain soaked conditions in Terre Haute, Indiana. The senior’s efforts propelled her team to a 16th place finish while the men’s team finished 24th overall thanks to a 14th place finish by Will Geoghegan ’14.

Twenty members of the Class of 2014 with the highest cumulative grade point averages were inducted as junior members into the Dartmouth chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in a ceremony in the Wren Room at Sanborn House on Tuesday. This year’s early inductees are Julia Berkowitz ’14, Jacqueline Calloway ’14, James Carlson ’14, Phillip Coletti ’14, Laura Cressman ’14, Christopher Hauser ’14, Mitchell Jacobs ’14, Jeffrey Keller ’14, Kristina Lee ’14, Jake Leichtling ’14, Serena Liu ’14, Kellie MacPhee ’14, Gabriela Meade ’14, Charles Pastuszenski ’14, Jonathan Pedde ’14, Chien-Yi Png ’14, Ethan Portnoy ’14, Rebecca Rothfeld ’14, Natalie Salmanowitz ’14, Ryan Smith ’14, Samuel Tan ’14, Ezra Toback ’14 and Danny Wong ’14. Students do not apply for early induction, but the chapter votes members into the society based on their academic excellence. Dartmouth’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter was founded in 1787, making it the fourth oldest chapter in the nation. Rothfeld is a staff columnist for The Dartmouth, and Carlson and Pedde are business and editorial members, respectively, of The Dartmouth senior staff.

The cross country teams had strong showings this weekend at the Ivy League Cross Country Heptagonal Championships in Princeton, N.J., with the women taking home the Ivy title in a 6K race and the men finishing third in an 8K. The women ran away with the competition, defeating second-place Cornell University by 28 points.

Discussing his book, “The Centrist Manifesto,” in a lecture Saturday morning, economics and public policy professor Charles Wheelan ’88 outlined his idea for a new political party that would integrate the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans. The Centrist Party aims to appeal to the 60 percent Americans who expressed in a recent Gallup poll that they would support a third party.

The women’s hockey team fell in both home games this weekend. The Big Green (0-3-0, 0-2-0 ECAC) lost its home opener to Princeton University (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC) Friday, followed by a loss to ninth-ranked Quinnipiac University (6-1-1, 1-1-1 ECAC) Saturday.

The Big Green (8-9, 1-4 Ivy) opened Homecoming Friday against the Lions (4-9, 2-2 Ivy). The loss was the Big Green's sixth straight loss of the season and the seventh consecutive loss against Columbia in program history.
