Without a powerful emblem like the bonfire or snow sculpture, Green Key is often said to lack meaning, but this weekend is as rich in tradition as Homecoming or Winter Carnival. As we sat in Rauner browsing vintage photos of Green Key celebrations, we were struck by the familiarity in everything Dartmouth never changes. Gone are the days of minstrel shows, but today's Green Key is still the same celebration of friends, spring and the Dartmouth spirit that endures all change.

The death penalty debate currently stemming from Steven Hayes' trial over the murder of Hayley Petit and her mother and sister may become a significant factor in the upcoming Connecticut gubernatorial race. Hayes and the second suspect, Joshua Komisarjevsky, whose trial has not yet begun, are expected to face capital punishment if convicted.

The election of Morton Kondracke '60 and John Replogle '88 both Alumni Council nominees to the Board of Trustees was the first test of how disagreements between Dartmouth alumni about the Board's 2007 decision to end parity would affect the election of new trustees. This election the first of the past five elections in which a petition candidate lost, and the first election to occur under recently-passed election reforms may represent a departure from the criticism of College administrators that marked alumni elections during the later years of former College President James Wright's administration.

College President Jim Yong Kim announced several changes to the structure of the administration in an effort to "introduce a more integrated senior management structure," he said in a letter to the College community Thursday evening. The reorganization, which will be implemented June 1, overhauls the hierarchy of the administration, while also reassigning certain duties.

Voting alumni elected all 11 members of the "Unity" slate to the Association of Alumni executive board with a margin of more than 70 percent, incumbent Association President John Mathias '69 announced at the Association's annual meeting on Saturday. The slate defeated the "Dartmouth United" petition slate, led by presidential candidate J. Michael Murphy '61.

Campaign efforts in the Board of Trustees election, which concludes today, have been reminiscent in rhetoric and tactics to the campaign strategies used in the alumni trustee elections in 2005 and 2007, despite recent changes to the election structure. The campaigns all featured substantial spending, web sites critical of opposing candidates and the participation of secondary organizations and current trustees.

Two alumni-run nonprofit organizations The Hanover Institute and Dartmouth Undying, groups which have supported opposing candidates in recent Board of Trustees and Association of Alumni elections each raised about $500,000 in donations in 2008 for election efforts, according to representatives from both organizations. Each organization has spent tens of thousands of dollars of these donations to fund e-mail and mailing campaigns to support candidates in recent and current Board and Association elections.

With little more than a week remaining in the Association of Alumni election voting period, the race has become more divided after news of continuing legal action against the Board of Trustees. The alumni lawsuit which was dismissed in January and is being appealed by its plaintiffs to the New Hampshire Supreme Court has split the competing slates along political lines, with the "Unity" slate rejecting the suit unequivocally and the "Dartmouth United" petition slate encompassing a variety of opinions.

JoeVsDartmouth.com -- which billed itself as a web site founded by Dartmouth alumni against the petition candidacy of Joe Asch '79 for the Board of Trustees -- was taken down Saturday evening. Christopher Allen '07, the chief technical officer for the shared campaign between Alumni Council-nominated candidates for the Board of Trustees -- John Replogle '88 and Morton Kondracke '60 -- created the site, according to his user profile on Blogger.com, which also cites him as the creator of the campaign web sites of Replogle and Kondracke.
