“A Keurig brewer on every counter and a beverage for every occasion” is a motto that rings more like a prophecy. Over the past year, the Keurig company has sold over nine billion K-cups that are not biodegradable nor easily recyclable. Nearly a quarter of homes in the United States own one and every Dartmouth department office, snack bar and house center has one as well.

The Office of Greek Life, formerly known as Greek Letter Organizations and Societies, launched “Greek 101” last Monday, a two-week-long series of workshops with titles including “Discipline and Dunkins,” “Fried Rice and Fiscal Responsibility” and “DBI and Dumplings.” The programming that included presentations by the Alcohol Management Program, representatives from the Office of Pluralism and Leadership and undergraduate deans, among many other College staff members. Greek executives, who began their tenure this term, were encouraged to attend the workshops in an effort to familiarize the students with college resources available.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center has withdrawn from the Pioneer Accountable Care Organization Model, which requires participating medical centers to emphasize quality of care rather than fee for service care, DHMC director of external relations Rick Adams and DHMC director of value-based reimbursement modelsLynn Guillette said.

Former New Hampshire House of Representatives speaker Terie Norelli (Dem.) has been praised for her collaborative spirit and gregarious nature by her colleagues in the legislature and for serving as symbol of female empowerment in politics. The Rockefeller Center has named her this year’s Perkins Bass Distinguished Visitor for her long and fruitful career.

The College’s single-sex fraternities will be hosting a formal open house pre-rush event for the first time on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. The decision to make the open house an additional segment of the men’s rush process was made during the 2015 spring term.

This week, nine Bolivian students will visit the College, led by Foreign Service Officer Yuki Kondo-Shah ’07 in order to enrich their international business and entrepreneurship studies at Universidad Catolica, an elite English-language undergraduate business school in La Paz, Bolivia. This visit to the College is sponsored by the United States Department of State as part of President Barack Obama’s “100,000 Strong in the Americas” initiative to improve U.S. relationships with Western Hemisphere countries through student exchanges.

A Voluntary Support of Education survey ranked Dartmouth as the fourth highest charitable donation contributor per student from private research institutions, VSE survey director Ann Kaplan said. The results of survey, which were released last Wednesday, revealed that Dartmouth raised over $250 million in charitable donations in fiscal year 2014, a 56 percent increase from the previous year’s $160 million in donations.

Hanover Police Chief Charlie Dennis said late last week that he has been encouraging a preexisting policy under which officers issue students a summons and turn them over to Dartmouth Safety and Security instead of arresting and processing students at the police station. Since he became chief in June, he has been evaluating police proceedings, and put in place a new policy starting Jan. 1 where Hanover Police will only be involved in the transport of intoxicated students from Dick’s House to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center if they are requested.

The Dartmouth Class of 1964 formally announced last Wednesday a $10.1 million donation to fund the leadership development programs created through the ’64 Leadership Initiative Fund. The Fund began in June 2014 as a part of the class’s theme of “a tradition in leadership” for the class’s 50th year anniversary.

Nearly 20,500 students have applied for acceptance to the Class of 2019, representing a more than six percent increase in applications over last year, the College announced yesterday. This follows a more than 10 percent increase in the number of students who applied to Dartmouth through the early decision program.

The College’s most recent alumni have begun conducting interviews with its newest applicants via Skype. The pilot program, organized by former admissions office intern Alex Judson ’14, connects members of the Class of 2014 with applicants to the Class of 2019 who live in areas with fewer alumni interviewers.

Dartmouth saw a 10 percent increase in the number of early decision applicants this year, with an all-time high of 1,856 applications for the Class of 2019. This marks the second year that the College has seen an increase in the number of early applicants — following a 12.6 percent drop in early applicants for the Class of 2017 — coinciding with a national shift toward early admission programs.

Students walking across the Green at 11 a.m. yesterday heard the Baker Library bells resonate with service hymns in a moment of observance for Veterans Day. Last Thursday marked the launch of a weeklong commemoration of Dartmouth students and alumni who previously served in the military, which included the Third Annual Veterans Day Banquet and a Veterans Day breakfast.
