Dare I speak for most track and field athletes, but the consensus among us is that the outdoor season is our favorite. Runners can’t help but get excited at the thought of transitioning from the grueling indoor season — which involves temperatures close to zero degrees outside, icy running trails and sunsets at 4 p.m. — to the more pleasant outdoor season. To me, the outdoor track season signifies 75-degree weather, a more spacious 400m track to run around and post-practice swims in the Connecticut River. Track athletes like to fantasize about the energy the outdoor season brings. However, the reality is that racing outdoors can be just as challenging as racing indoors.

The Big Green baseball team started its spring break trip strong as they secured their first win against the University of South Florida. The 6-1 victory was followed by a 4-3 loss to split the series. Dartmouth did not regain momentum for the remainder of the trip, falling to the University of Central Florida, Jacksonville University and Princeton University.

Big Green baseball is looking to maintain its strong performance in conference play following its 2022 season. Last spring, the Big Green finished with a 24-19 overall record and 14-7 in conference play to secure a third place finish in the standings.

On Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26, men’s and women’s track and field competed at the 2023 Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Track and Field Championships at the Leverone Field House in Hanover. The men’s team placed fifth overall while the women’s team tied Columbia University for fourth.

Last weekend, men’s tennis hosted the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championship at the Boss Tennis Center. The Big Green lost its first two matches against Columbia University and Yale University, but ended the weekend on a positive note with a win against Brown University in the seventh-place match.

Last Friday, women’s tennis faced off against defending Ivy League champion Princeton University to commence the ECAC Indoor Championship at the Boss Tennis Center. The Big Green fell to the Tigers 4-3. The team triumphantly came back the next day with an upset against Cornell University 4-1, before ending the championship matches on Sunday with a 4-0 loss to Yale University.

On Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11, the Big Green ski team competed at the Harvard Carnival in Dublin and Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. The team fended off the University of Vermont to claim first place in an Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival for the first time in nearly four years.
